LGBTQ Concerns Should Go to State

Editor, News-Register:

I write to thank you and opine.

First I thank the editors of the Wheeling Intelligencer and the Wheeling News-Register for providing the most important headlines and happenings in Wheeling on Facebook. For those of us who have left the valley seeking fame and fortune, or for a host of other reasons, it is good to keep in touch with the homeland and keep the old “Wheeling Feeling” stirring.

Now to opine. I read online this morning, August 19, that the Family Policy Council of West Virginia is questioning the Wheeling City Council on the documentation developed by the council for proposed protections of lesbians, gay, bisexual and transgender residents of Wheeling. I understand the council is working in sync with the Wheeling Human Rights Commission.

I recall, not that many years ago, when I lived in Wheeling, that the Wheeling Human Rights Commission was, I thought, disbanded because of budget considerations and its lack of any tangible benefit to the community; plus the fact that West Virginia provides an HR Commission operating statewide out of Charleston.

Perhaps the new council has solved the myriad of problems inherited from the previous council, and now has time to devote itself to matters of little or no consequence to the majority of Wheeling residents; but then I read that the new mayor’s campaign focused on the problems of the LGBTQ in Wheeling, problems which I didn’t know existed, and probably don’t exist, except for the headline seekers, and those scrounging the depths to give their unmassaged egos meaning.

If anyone is discriminated against because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, age, or other consideration; they should immediately contact the WV Human Rights Commission, 1321 Plaza East, Room 108A Charleston WV 25301-1400, telephone 304-558-2616.

This is not an issue for the Wheeling City Council or an unneeded Wheeling Human Rights Commission. I urge the council to deal with the problems of a floundering city, which I, like so many, would like to see restored to prosperity and growth.
