Concerns About Health Care Proposal Listed

Editor, News-Register:

In the Wheeling Intelligencer on March 7 was an article about repealing the Affordable Care Act. Congressman David McKinley is saying what the bill Congress is trying to replace it with it keeps. The bad part of this terrible legislation is what it doesn’t keep. The old saying, “the devil is in the details” sure applies to this legislation being supported by Congressman McKinley.

Even GOP senators have concern with this bill and what it will do to the citizens. Senators Shelly Capito, Rob Portman, Cory Gardner and Lisa Murkowski sent a letter to McConnell expressing their concerns.

Some of the things I think are problems:

1. The bill does not protect people of Medicaid expansion, especially those with mental health issues.

2. The article said the bill will PROBABLY lower the cost of insurance by 2019.

3. Removing people that are considered HIGH RISK from the plan and shifting the cost to the states. The federal government will send funds to the state. Look at the programs that are being cut by the GOP in West Virginia now because of the budget.

4. After 2020, West Virginia would no longer receive money from the federal government to pay for expansion of Medicaid. This would further strain West Virginia’s budget.

5. It would replace income based subsidies with age based tax credits. Would that mean that an elderly person would get tax credits while a younger person earning wages at the poverty level would not?

6. The news story said that some GOP senators are worried about the interruption of insurance to people.

7. I do not see where the insurance companies would be required to keep rates down or any way for control of the costs.

8. There is nothing in the bill about employers supplying insurance for employees or making employers to pay for the insurance that was in a contract if they file bankruptcy. Look at the situation of the coal miners insurance.

I think this bill will either result in citizens paying more for insurance for less coverage.
