Park, Central Should Compete More Often

Editor, News-Register:

I recently had the opportunity to read an article written by Josh Strope, sports editor of the Wheeling News-Register and The Intelligencer.

It seemed that teacher Gail Adams, an English teacher of advanced topics at Wheeling Park High School, decided to undertake a project aimed at providing financial hurricane relief to the victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria which ravaged regions of the U.S. and their possessions, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas, in the Virgin Islands. Adams’ goal was to involve her students in a humanitarian philanthropic undertaking and over 100 students from her classes became involved in the mission termed appropriately, “High Schools for High Schools.”

Adams was quoted as saying “we started to brainstorm and they came up with the idea of kickball.” They were able to get the students from Wheeling Central Catholic to agree to join in and Adams pointed out correctly that “getting other high schools to join us is just a way to get the community more involved.” The two schools paired off to play the kickball tournament from noon to 5 p.m. on Oct. 22 at the J.B. Chambers, I-470 Complex in Elm Grove. The organization also secured some corporate sponsors to assist with the fundraising.

Case in Point: Our ” educators” in Ohio County should take a lesson from these youngsters and their teacher, Gail Adams. If students from our two schools can organize and participate in a kickball tournament, why can’t Park and Central square off in sports such as soccer, tennis, golf, basketball, volleyball, and softball? I am aware and do understand the system of compiling points in classes and I further understand that football participation may not be realized.

However, I think it’s time for both high schools to put aside any differences which may have occurred in recent years and “step up to the plate.” Our community would welcome it.
