Reject Cuts to Federal Food Stamp Program

Editor, News-Register:

Fifty-four years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared war on poverty. But today, Republicans are waging war on the poor.

Having just passed the most cruel and short-sighted tax bill in history, now Republicans in Congress are hell-bent on going after “entitlements.” What does that mean? They want to use the budget crisis that they created to dismantle Medicare, Medicaid and other social programs that can make a life-and-death difference for poor people.

With the Farm Bill up for renewal in 2018, expect them to try and make drastic cuts to food stamps, as food stamps are included as part of the Farm Bill.

We can stop them. With Doug Jones in the Senate, now Republicans can only afford to lose one vote and still pass bills through that chamber. The key is that we start raising our voices now, letting them know that this is unacceptable. We must let the elitist Republicans in Washington know that we will accept absolutely no cuts to food stamps whatsoever. None.

Given that so many are working fewer hours or for lower wages, slashing food assistance will only makes things worse. Congress must say no to any Food Stamp cuts.
