Creating Opportunity

Editor, News-Register:

As a Wheeling-based business, we know first-hand how natural gas development is creating the kind of local job growth and economic opportunities described in a recent article (“Oil and Gas Industry Still Good for Businesses,” Feb. 25).

Our family-owned service company, Roughcut, has grown with the industry here in the Ohio Valley — from eight employees when we started 10 years ago to more than 90 today — and we’ve opened two additional West Virginia businesses, thanks to the opportunities natural gas has brought to our region. By helping to cultivate a strong local workforce, we’ve built trusting relationships with natural gas producers such as Southwestern Energy that share our commitments to hiring local and investing in our communities.

We’re proud to provide long-term, good-paying jobs to hard-working employees who can now put down roots in our communities, instead of leaving in search of jobs elsewhere. They are buying homes here and boosting the economy by shopping and dining locally. And in turn, those businesses can also hire more local employees in reinvest in our communities.

Natural gas has reversed years of bad news when it came to jobs and local investment here. And the future is even brighter. It’s nice to see that kind of good news being reported.
