Heartbeat Bill Wrong
Republicans in Columbus just passed the nation’s most extreme abortion ban to date, and Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed it.
This near-total abortion ban abandons the health of mothers and provides no exceptions for rape and incest, banning abortion after five to six weeks, before most women even know they’re pregnant.
Republicans even rejected amendments to the bill that would’ve made exceptions for women whose physical or mental health is at risk, fetal abnormality and medical complications, and pregnancies as the result of rape or incest.
They also rejected amendments to increase funding for infant and maternal mortality prevention programs, restore funding for preventive health programs, and increase state assistance for child care.
Republican politicians in Columbus are doing the bidding of right-wing special interest groups and lobbyists, instead of focusing on an agenda to support Ohio women and help Ohio kids.
Rather than dealing with infant mortality or children’s health insurance, the Ohio GOP is pushing plainly unconstitutional legislation that is designed to ban abortion in the state.
One GOP representative said on the House floor that Republicans are “excited” because they see this bill heading to the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down Roe v. Wade. Seven in 10 Americans do not want to see Roe overturned. Meanwhile, this legal fight will cost Ohio taxpayers millions of dollars.
A woman should have the ability to make her own personal decision about whether or not to become a parent, and no politician should interfere in that decision. This bill is a disgrace, and it will endanger women’s lives in Ohio.
