Flag Day Events Are Scheduled
Several specials events will be taking place in Marshall County during the next couple of weeks.
This Thursday, Flag Day will be observed, while Friday evening through Saturday morning, the countywide Relay for Life event will be taking place, and also, Friday evening, there will be a musical event in Clouston.
The Flag Day Parade and Flag Disposal Ceremony will take place in Moundsville, with everyone invited to walk in the parade. Youngsters are encouraged to decorate their bikes in red, white and blue and be a part of the parade. Those under 10 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
Free flags will be distributed along the parade route, there will be patriotic music played, and persons with unserviceable flags can give them to parade participants.
The parade will begin on Grant Avenue in front of Mound Post No. 437, Veterans of Foreign Wars. It will proceed south of Grant to Second Street, east on Second to Birch Avenue, south on Birch to Third Street, east on Third to Cedar Avenue, south on Cedar to Sixth Street, west on Sixth to Grant Avenue, north on Grant to the Altmeyer Funeral Home parking lot where the flag disposal ceremony will take place.
The Flag Day event is being sponsored by Sons of the American Legion, Squadron No. 3.
The Relay for Life of Marshall County event will take place from 6 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday in the north parking lot at John Marshall High School.
The walk is a unique overnight event that offers everyone the opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer, with cancer survivors being the heart of the relay. The event will begin with survivors introducing themselves, and walking a celebratory lap, cheered on by family and friends.
The traditional luminary ceremony will begin at dusk.
There will be 33 teams participating in the event, with 582 individuals registered to take part.
This year’s goal is $73,000, and money turned in as of May 31 was $38,000, with the Reynolds Memorial Hospital team first and St. Francis Xavier Church team second.
Slim Lehart’s annual country music show at the Cameron Community Recreational facility will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, with food to be sold beginning at 5 p.m.
In addition to Lehart, the show will include four former Wheeling Jamboree performers and two newcomers, Chelsa Matta, the winner of last year’s Jacktown Fair’s Idol contest and Sara Rose. Also performing will be the Wheeling Express Band.
Those attending are to bring chairs.
As to the West Virginia Day observance on June 20, one of the sites will be the Cockayne Farmstead in Glen Dale.
There will be tours from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. A West Virginia birthday cake and ice cream will be served free while supplies last.
Also during the day, archaeologists will be digging for history on the Farmstead property.
There will be children’s games, including “fishing” from Huck Finn’s raft.
There will be a catered picnic dinner at 6 p.m. with an Appalachian musical prelude by Rich Greenlee, dean at Ohio University’s Eastern Campus.
Storyteller, humorist and impersonator Stephen Hollen will appear as Mark Twain, and others performing will be several Twain characters along with Samuel A.J. Cockayne and his wife, Hannah.
There will be a $4 charge to tour the Farmstead, and tickets for the picnic will be $12. There will also be VIP table seating for eight at $150. Tickets may be obtained by sending a check to: Cockayne Farmstead, 1105 Wheeling Ave., Glen Dale, 26038. Or, if you prefer, stop at the Farmstead office on Mondays and Wednesdays to make a personal reservation. This Friday is the deadline for making a picnic reservation.

Applications for the Marshall County Fair Queen’s pageants are to be returned by July 3.
Applications are available at the fair’s website, www.marshallcountyfair.net, or by calling 304-281-5790 or at the Marshall County Extension Office.
The pageants will be held on July 23, the first of four such events to be at 5:30 p.m. The pageants are for girls ages 7-21, with participants to be showcased in a variety of competitions including: interview, streetwear, evening Gown and event promotion.
In addition there will be a Junior King and Queen Pageant fro 4-6 year old girls and boys at 3:30 p.m. on July 23.
The winners of all divisions will actively participate in fair activities throughout the week.
Auditions for the production of “Hansel and Gretel” will be held from 10 a.m. until noon on June 18 at the Strand Theatre. There is no charge for the auditions or to participate in the production.
Among the roles to be cast are those intrepid adventures -Hansel and Gretel, the Wildwood Witch and her loyal servants, the crafty cooks, modern day campers and such nasty critters as creepy denizens of the deep, and a flock of cuddly Wallybirds.
Students entering first grade through 12th grade are encouraged to auction.
The “Hansel and Gretel” presentation will be at 6 p.m. on June 22 and at 2 p.m. on June 23 at the Strand.

The “Hansel and Gretel” event is being held in conjunction with the Strand’s Performing Arts Council sponsoring of the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MTC) Touring Company June 18-23.
