Clean-Up Dates, Sites Are Listed

The annual Spring Clean-Up in Marshall County officially begins on May 4.

Dumpsters will be available at 15 locations during the months of May and June, and in addition there will be special day for residents to bring electronics, tires, rims and white good goods.

Also, there will one day for proper disposal of hazardous materials, and another day designed for the cleanup of the banks of the Ohio River.

These clean-up efforts are in conjunction with Operation Pride, an awareness program which has been in existence for 41 years.

The Marshall County Commission and the Marshall Solid Waste Authority will provide for free dumpsters for the clean-up, with the state REAP program, a division of the state Environmental Protection a part of the recycling of tires, rims, white goods undertaking.

The dates of the community clean-ups are as follows:

May 4, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

– Limestone Volunteer Fire Department Headquarters.

– Sherrard Middle School.

May 11, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

– Dallas Volunteer Fire Department.

– The former Big Wheeling Creek Fire House.

– St. Joseph Volunteer Fire Department Headquarters.

May 17, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and May 18, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

– Benwood City Garage.

– McMechen City Garage.

May 31, 9 a.m. tp 2 p.m. and

June 1, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

– 12th Street Entrance to Valley Fork Park (East).

– Glen Dale City Garage.

June 8, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

– Washington Lands (Todd Kelly Trucking).

– Graysville Community Center.

June 15, 8 a.m. tp 2 p.m.

– Rosbys Rock (former coal mine parking lot).

– Roberts Ridge Volunteer Fire Department Headquarters.

June 22, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

– Clouston’s Dragon Field.

– Glen Easton.

It needs to be noted that at all of the above locations there will be no provisions to accept tires, white goods, scrap metal, car parts, fuels, hazardous chemicals/materials or household trash.

If you have used furniture, toys, bikes and other household items to be disposed of, Appalachian Outreach Inc. will be at all the sites to accepted such items.

The annual hazardous waste collection conducted by Bayer and Axtall (formerly PPG) will take place from 9 a.m. until noon on April 13 at the Bayer facility. Paints and cleaning chemicals will be accepted.

The hazardous waste clean-up is also open to residents of Wetzel, Belmont and Monroe counties.

From 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on May 18 electronics (including televisions), tires/rims along with white goods will be accepted at the north parking lot of Monarch Stadium in Moundsville.

Marshall County residents are encouraged to participate in the annual River Sweep, which will begin at 8 a.m. on June 15 at Riverfront Park in Moundsville.

The deadline for businesses and others to register to participate for the annual Marshall County Home and Business Expo is Thursday. The event will held March 8-9 at the Training Center within the walls of the former West Virginia Penitentiary.

The Fostoria Museum will be opening for the season on Saturday. The museum will be open from 1-4 p.m., Wednesdays through Saturdays.

Among other events which will be taking place during the month of March are:

Bishop Donahue High School will be having a chicken dinner on March 3 in the school cafeteria, sponsored by Wheeling Hospital. Doors will open at 11 a.m., closing at 4 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the school and anyone wishing to obtain additional information is to call the school at 304-233-3850.

A seasonal Job Fair will be held from noon until 4 p.m. on March 10 at Grand Vue Park.

The 30th annual Marshall County Student Art Show will be held March 10 through April 7 at the Grave Creek Mound Complex.

“Tunes at Grand Vue” will be held at 7 p.m. on March 16. It is free and open to the public.

Grand Vue Park will be holding a St. Patrick’s Day Scavenger Hunt from noon until 3 p.m. on March 17, with the cost $3 per person.

The movie, “True Grit” will be shown at 7 p.m. on March 22-23 at the Strand Theatre.

An all-day event will take place from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on March 30 at Riverfront Park and on Jefferson Avenue (Second to Fifth Streets), Jefferson Avenue. The event, sponsored by the Moundsville Activities Committee, will include an Easter Egg Hunt, Spoon Egg Run, and an Easter Bonnet Parade.

The 36th annual Marshall County Ham, Bacon and Egg Show and Sale will be held on March 6 at the Chesapeake Energy Building at the Marshall County Fairgrounds in Moundsville, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m., and the sale beginning at 6:30 p.m.
