Preview of Trees, Wreaths Slated

Since many people have asked to be able to view the Christmas trees and wreaths in advance of the Tree Gala auction, which will take place on Thursday, the committee has decided to have a public reception from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday.

The 28 trees to be auctioned, along with wreaths, are on display at St. Jude Fellowship Hall in Glen Dale, located behind Reynolds Memorial Hospital.

As to the auction, it will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, with Jim Behm as the auctioneer, with no charge for admission. Also, there will be no admission charge for Wednesday’s public viewing.

Prior to the auction, the monthly Marshall County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event will be held, beginning at 5 p.m.

The BAH will be sponsored by WesBanco, with Perkins Restaurant and Bakery as the caterer.

Free parking at meters in the Moundsville business district went into effect Friday and will continue through Jan. 1.

Not included are parking meters around the courthouse.

U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin III will be having a public meeting at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the circuit courtroom at the Marshall County Courthouse. Everyone is invited.

The Marshall County Commission recently signed a grant application and resolution for the Benwood Coal Mine Disaster Memorial. If approve, the grant, which is through the Governor’s Community Participation Grant Program, will help the committee to reach its monetary goal toward the memorial.

The committee hopes to have the memorial erected by April 28, 2014, which is the 90th anniversary of the explosion.

Grand Vue Park general manager Craig White has announced that events for 2014 are nearly complete.

Also, he said work on the exterior of the four traditional cabins has been completed except for painting. With the work of new windows and other outside work completed, the cabins are now energy efficient.

Total remodeling of the cabins is expected to be completed by May 2014.

The Marshall County Commission has approved a contribution in the amount of $10,000 toward the restoration of the former NAPA building, which is now owned by American Legion Post No. 18.

The Legion is currently in the process of making improvements to the building so that it can be utilized for Legion and community activities.

The city of Cameron, which owns the former Cameron High School building, has received several inquiries about rental of the building for different functions ranging from wedding receptions to sporting events.

The Cameron Christmas Parade will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, with units in the parade to begin lining up at the former Cameron High School at 1 p.m.

Also, there will be a light-up ceremony held Friday evening in the parking lot of BB&T. The CHS choral group will provide music.

The Marshall County Courthouse will be closed all day on Dec. 24, and a half day on Dec. 31.

The annual John Marshall Band cookie sale will be held beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday in the school’s south commons.

“The Gift of the ‘Chrisagis’ A Christmas Concert,” will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the Strand Theatre in Moundsville, sponsored by the Moundsville Baptist Church.

Featured will be the Chrisagis Brothers, Ron Retzer, JD Garrison, Jennifer Galownia and Bob Wolfe.

Today is the deadline for making reservations for “Memories of Christmas” at the Sanford Center. The event will be held from 5-7 p.m. Saturday.

Children age 8 and under will be photographed with Santa.

West Virginia Poet Laureate Marc Harshman will be present from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library, where his recent collection of poetry titled, “All That Feeds Us” will be available for purchase. Harshman will also be signing the book,.

The book was released earlier this year by publisher Quarrier Press.

There will be Christmas sing-a-alongs at 6:30 p.m. at the Benwood-McMechen Public Library on Dec. 11, and at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 16 at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library.

Wesley Howsare will provide musical entertainment at both events prior to the arrival of his “buddy,” Santa Claus.

E. Michael Abraham was recently named to the three-member Marshall County Deputy Sheriff’s Civil Service Board. His appointment was made by the Marshall County Commission. Abraham is a member of the Abraham Accounting firm.
