Discount Package Being Offered

The “Adventure Begins Here!” promotion spearheaded by the Marshall County Tourism committee is doing very well.

Eight major attractions in the Moundsville-Glen Dale area have joined in to offer reduced admissions in the hopes of attracting more visitors to the area. In addition, discounts are being offered by several area restaurants and stores.

Designed to allow family adventures at an affordable price, the bundling program brings new focus to Marshall County.

The tourism effort involves the former West Virginia Penitentiary, the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex, the Palace of Gold, Marx Toy Museum, Fostoria Glass Museum, Cockayne Farmstead, Johnny Shar’s Big Dipper Museum and Grand Vue Park.

According to GVP General Manager Craig White, one admission to each of these attractions is normally more than $55, however, the bundling program allows a person to visit them unlimited for 30 consecutive days at a cost of $20 per person. In addition, GVP’s Zip Line program is also offering discounts

White said some Marshall County shops and restaurants have also committed to the ABP, with participating restaurants offering from 10 percent to 20 percent discounts patrons can obtain by showing their Adventure Bundling Card.

White said, “It is unusual for bundling programs to offer discounts for 30 continuous days.”

“It took us a little longer than anticipated to get the program up-and-running, but everyone involved is now excited about having such a program,” he added.

The 16th annual Elizabethtown Festival will be an event of Sept. 13-14 at the former West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville. The hours will be from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Sept. 14 and 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sept. 15.

The deadline for vendors wishing to participate is Aug. 15, with all vendors and food concessionaries required to participate both days of the festival.

The festival is an early 1800s heritage festival honoring the former community that was settled prior to West Virginia becoming a state. It will consist of historical displays and memorabilia, heritage demonstrations, musical entertainment, vendors, food and games, special activities, and a celebration of heritage and tradition.

The first Elizabethtown Festival was held in 1999 to celebrate the long-forgotten town that Joseph Tomlinson, an Irish immigrant’s son, established in 1738 and named in honor of his wife, Elizabeth.

Elizabethtown merged with neighboring Moundsville to become one town in 1866 and on Feb. 23 of that year the first city officials of the town were named with many family names still local to the area today.

There is no admission charge.

The Grave Creek Mound Fan Club will begin Tuesday and continue through Aug. 30.

This activity will include the making of a small fan at the museum’s discovery table. The fans will feature a photograph of the Grave Creek Mound that can be colored and attached to wooden fan handles.

At 7 p.m. on July 31 visitors to the Grave Creek Mound Complex will have the opportunity to learn how the interpretive garden is grown and observe its progress this year. They can also take a tour of the garden, weather permitting.

This is the fifth year for planting the garden with heirloom seeds using historic Native American gardening techniques.

The deadline for signing up for the Marshall County Fair Junior King and Queen Pageant is Monday. The event for boys and girls ages 4-6 will be held at 3:30 p.m. on July 21 at the fairgrounds in Moundsville.

Moundsville residents have until Aug. 19 to file applications to become candidates for city council.

Forms can be picked up in person at the city clerk’s office during regular office hours, which are 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Three seats on council expire on Dec. 31. They are for Second Ward, Fourth Ward and at-large. These seats are currently held respectively by David Wood, Ginger DeWitt and Philip Remke.

The city election is held in conjunction with the general election, which is Nov. 4.

Tickets are on sale for “Chicago The Musical,” a play to be held July 31 through Aug. 3 at the Strand Theatre. The times for the first three dates are 7:30 p.m., while the Aug. 3 event will be at 2 p.m.

Advance tickets can be purchased at the Moundsville Pharmacy, Marshall County Chamber of Commerce and Goin’ Postal.

“Chicago” is the story from the 1920s of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who maliciously murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines.

“Chicago” was the winner of six 1997 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival and the Grammy for Best Musical Cast Recording.

The local version of this production is being directed by Jana Jarrett, with Justin Jones as musical director, and choreography by Anna Harsh.

Cast members include Paige Madden, Gabby Payne, Renee Zelinski, Mack Kale, Joseph Heatherington, Heath Kale, Izzie Keim, Connie Young, Danielle Walter, Stefanie Lemasters, Willie McCleery, William Hoffman, Peter Lim, Greg Gust, Michael Wylie, Chris Jarrett, Megan Chacalos, Donna VanScyoc, Stephen Thompson and Tanya Ortiz.

The Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library will present the third in a series of six films in its Summer Cinema series, “Pick of the Lit”-featuring movies based on books-on Monday. This feature is titled, “Life of PI,” a disaster at sea and a fight for survival bringing together a young man and a fearsome Bengal tiger. It is based on a novel by Yann Martel.

The 127- minute movies is rated PG.

Appalachian Outreach Inc. will be sponsoring a carand bike show on Aug. 3 at Grand Vue Park. Registration will begin at 10 a.m., with the show being from 1-4 p..m. There will be music provided by Frank Allen.

There will be awards in the form of cash, gift cards or certificates, Also door prizes and a 50-50 raffle will be offered.

Food will be prepared by the Ash Avenue Church of God and the West Liberty Lions Club.

Proceeds from the event will benefit victims of poverty and disasters in West Virginia.
