Effort in Marshall County Fills Food Stores

By the Truckload

As part of a push for the Family Resource Network to gather food for the Hunger Doesn’t Take A Summer Vacation drive, Marshall County residents gathered 9,100 pounds of food.

Sarah Wood, speaking on behalf of the FRN at the Moundsville City Council meeting, said that while attending the Hunger Summit some weeks after the drive’s conclusion, she was surprised to hear that Kanhawa County at its peak had managed to bring in a little over one-third of what Marshall County had — 3,500 pounds.

Not bad for their first time.

Fish Out of Water

It’s been an eventful few weeks for emergency responders in Marshall County. Recently, McMechen’s volunteer fire chief Jeff Kady found himself a little outside his element when called to a roadside assist, where he helped successfully deliver an infant on the roadside. Kady was to be awarded for his efforts with a stork pin.

New Buildings Almost Ready

Construction on the new shopping center at the site of the former Bonanza Steakhouse at the Ohio Valley Mall is nearly complete. A multiple businesses will be in the new structure. Meanwhile, work continues on the new grocery store near Sheetz along National Road in St. Clairsville.

New construction projects may soon be plenty in Belmont County if officials with PTT Global Chemical decide to build their multi-billion-dollar ethane cracker complex at Dilles Bottom. Leaders believe this would create even more industrial development, as well as create the need for more housing, hotels and shopping options.

Traffic Trouble

Navigating Main Street in downtown Wheeling before 5 p.m. on a weekday has become something of an adventure. The left lane of Main Street is closed from 11th Street to 12th Street to facilitate construction of the new headquarters for The Health Plan.

However, there are also other types of work taking place on Main Street. One day last week, the right lane was closed in the morning. This compelled motorists to shift lanes to avoid colliding with a fence or construction equipment.

Getting the Point Across

An unknown graffiti artist decided to make their feelings about the local drug epidemic known by writing the words “F— Heroin” in blue paint on one of the Wheeling Island side pillars of the Fort Henry Bridge (one of the letters in the expletive is replaced by an asterisk).

What the artist lacks in decorum, he or she makes up for in attention to detail. The message appears to have been painted using a stencil.
