In past years the annual American Red Cross Blood Drive has taken place at the First Presbyterian Church, Moundsville, but to make it easier for the staff to unload equipment, and for those giving blood, it has been decided to utilize the Training Center, which gives better access.

Received a flyer from B-MAC founders John Budinscak and John S. Marshall, outlining dates of a couple functions involving West Virginia University alumni and friends, one of which will be the 22nd annual Golf Classic which will once again be held at the Moundsville Country Club. This year’s date is July 20. It will consist of individual open and corporate cup competition.

It was also noted that the WVU Coaches Caravan will be taking place in Wheeling on May 1. In addition to head coaches, others expected to attend will be Athletic Firector Shayne Lyons, school administrators, assistant coaches, and Tony Caridi, the “Voice of the Mountaineers.”

In his monthly newsletter to fellow citizens, Moundsville Mayor Eugene Saunders Sr., states that it was an honor for him to make presentations to Moundsville Middle School eighth graders MacKenzie Neely and Savanna Davis, who were selected by the West Virginia Municipal League as the top two winners of the “If I Were Mayor” essay contest. Saunders notes that MMS has had at least one winner over the past four years. The students each received $250 and and a plaque, while city council presented them with certificates.

The mayor said council had approved the city sponsorship for the Mayor’s Choice and City Managers’ Choice awards as part of the annual car show to take place on June 5 on Jefferson Avenue between Second and Fifth Streets.

Saunders said he excused himself briefly from last Tuesday night’s meeting to go the John Marshall High School Fieldhouse where he and his wife, Ellen, accepted a basketball award on behalf of their son, Evan ‘”Dedsi” Saunders, a 1989 JMHS graduate. The award was presented by former coach Alfonso “Poncho” Flores for “Dedsi” being the first JMHS 1,000-point scorer.

The younger Saunders went on to attend both Potomac State and Glenville colleges, was later drafted in the first round (seventh overall) of a semi-pro basketball league with teams in Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The mayor noted that he, along with council members and city employees, at this past Tuesday’s meeting payed tribute to longtime council member Paul “Dude” Haynes who past away recently. Saunders said, “He loved the city of Moundsville, and he loved working with kids, I know he will be solely missed.”

By the way, Mayor Saunders was recently re-elected chairman of the city of Moundsville’s Parks and Recreation Board. The new vice chair is Linda Miller, while Maria Ebbert was re-elected as secretary.

At that particular meeting, several issues involving the Four Seasons Swimming Pool were discussed, one being applying for grant money. It was noted that the dehumidification unit needs to be moved from its present location to an outside area.

Three individuals who previously haven’t been in attendance as board members were in attendance and were asked by City Manager Deanna Hess to work with her in an effort to keep the pool open on a year-long basis.

Hess has been asked by city council members to prepare information dealing with both the pools and parks/recreation, and she in turn has asked for input from individuals who utilize these facilities.

Rich Lucas, administrator of the Marshall County Health Department, on Wednesday submitted his resignation. Lucas will be leaving his position in mid-March to accept a similar position with the Belmont County Health Department.

Dara Pond, who previously served as administrator, will assist with the administrative duties until the local health board fills Lucas’ position.
