Apology long overdue

February 26, 2010 - Heather Ziegler

Perhaps it is because it's Lent or maybe I have finally seen the error of my ways, but I have to apologize to basketball officials in the Ohio Valley (but not those in southern W.Va....  couldn't get a call if we bought one). Most of the officials know me and unfortunately that's not a good thing. You see I was one of those loud-mouthed basketball moms who pretty much blamed the basketball officials for everything that went wrong with a game. I even had my own cheers made up just for the guys wearing the stripes. I'm not proud of my actions and turn-about is fair play. You see my grown son is now a basketball official and he has opened my eyes to the difficulties they endure. They cannot see everything and they see things we don't from the stands. Locally I believe most officials are fair and try to do the right thing. I was dismayed, however, when a nationally-ranked basketball official came out and admitted he wagered bets on games he refereed. That was a black eye for sure. But back to the guys and gals here in the valley, please accept my long overdue apology. And when I have grandchildren playing ball, I promise to keep my mouth shut or at least tone it down to a respectful level.
