In the Land of Steelers
September 25, 2007 - Heather Ziegler
I found myself sitting in the parking lot of the Walmart in Washington, Pa. on Sunday morning waiting for the college son to meet me for a little shopping. As he played the Good Samaritan and changed a flat tire for a young lady, I had plenty of time for some observations. The parking lot at the Walmart was jammed. I mean it was really busy for a Sunday morning. As I watched the people hurrying -- and they were all in a hurry it seemed -- it became obvious to me I was out of place. Nearly every person I saw was wearing some sort of Pittsburgh Steelers shirt, jersey, hat, shorts. You name it. I saw it. I was dressed in a pink blouse and shorts and felt like a complete idiot who stood out in the crowd of black and gold. I smiled to myself as I observed this phenomenon. It was an incredible show of support for the Steelers. I'm told it's like this every game day. And all the shoppers were there getting their game goodies before kickoff. Then as we drove up Route 19 toward South Hills, there were signs of Steeler mania everywhere. Black and gold signs, balloons, blow-up lawn figures of growling Steelers and homemade signs decorated homes and businesses. At South Hills, the traffic was light and we breezed through the mall in an hour. People were not thinking about the mall on a game day in Pittsburgh. There again we witnessed people buying up Steeler apparel and actually putting it on in the stores. I am a Steelers fan but I had no idea how deep the passion was until I was in the thick of it on Sunday.
