Not Surprised

December 13, 2011 - Heather Ziegler
It was bound to happen sooner than later. The number of break-ins and burglaries to homes and businesses up and down the Ohio River Valley has gotten out of hand. And the fact that a store owner who happens to also live at his business felt threatened enough to shoot and kill someone reportedly trying to break in is the result of too many unsolved and unpunished crimes likes these. I've said it before in this blog that it's not right to be afraid in your own home. It's not the way America works that we should fear coming home to a burglarized home or business. We can lock our doors, employ a security system or own a large dog and the crimes still happen. Do I feel bad that an 18-year-old man-kid is dead at the end of a gun barrel? Of course, I do. I'm a mother and that would do me in to know that's how my son died, but I also understand being on the other side of the door. Where will it end? Heard there was another burglary in Warwood Terrace the other night. The burglars took all the Christmas gifts they could carry....Happy holidays.

I live here in Utah and it is the state law that..if you find anyone inside your home, for any reason other that you admitted them....it is legal to shoot to kill no matter what the threat. This is a law of the West from the Pioneer days and is still in effect today. Thats why they dont have very many break in's in Utah

re: thechief. How about parents start teaching their children not to go where they don't belong? Had this young man not been where it was not his business to be, none of this would have happened. Right and wrong starts at home. I know times are tough, but they are tough on everybody. Taking what's not yours or being where you have no business, well, you get what you get.

Before we go vilifying this young man, let's remember there is a grieving mother out there who now has to bury her son. No one likes crime, by all means, protect yourself. But according to the Castle statute, a person must feel in imminent danger. According to this article, the young man was shot outside the store. This possibly means the store owner went out to confront the young man instead of heading to a back room and dialing 911. Did the store have security cameras? Did the owner dial 911 or did the friends in the car? All of these are questions which will have to be addressed by the prosecutor's office. While I understand the frustration of local citizens, I must caution against vigilantism. If we start down that slippery road, it could be much worse than what we are currently facing.

Agreed Heather! Tons of break in's in the St.C area too and not one report on the evening news and the local sheriff does nothing to find the criminals! Let this be a lesson to those that try to steal - might be a dog, might be a shot gun barrel that meets you on the other side of that door!
