Littlest runners invited to Ogden Tiny Tot Trot

May 22, 2013 - Betsy Bethel
On your mark, get set, go!

OV Parent Magazine again will sponsor the Ogden Tiny Tot Trot on Friday, May 24, in downtown Wheeling. The aim of the annual event is to get the littlest of runners involved in the long-standing tradition of fitness surrounding the Odgen Newspapers Half-Marathon Classic weekend of events. Additional sponsors are Wheeling Country Day School, Vineyard Church, Easter Seals and Oglebay Institute.

The Tot Trot is free for children ages 5 and under. Registration begins at 5 p.m. at the Tot Trot tent located along 14th Street near WesBanco Arena. Parents also can register online at www.ogdenhalfmarathonclassic.com/ . Everyone will still be required to check in at the tent Friday and sign a release form. A limited supply of Tiny Tot Trot T-shirts will be available to purchase at that time for $5 on a first-come, first-served basis.

Families should plan to arrive at 5 (or earlier) to ensure they get a good parking spot and a T-shirt, and also to take advantage of some of the activities and resources that will be provided by local agencies and businesses who support the Tot Trot. We have 10 groups who have committed to being there to serve the families who come out. They are: Community Child Care Center, It Works, Ohio Valley Kids With Food Allergies, Children's Home Society of West Virginia, Northern Panhandle Head Start, Kindermusik With Judy, Ohio County Family Resource Network, Child Care Resource Center, Innovations Inc. and Children's Museum of the Ohio Valley.

The race begins at 6:45 p.m. with the older runners, ages 4 and 5. The course begins under the WesBanco skywalk on 14th Street and proceeds west on 14th toward the river, finishing at 14th and Main streets (about 100 yards.) Once they cross the finish line and clear the area, the children 3 and under will run. Parents are permitted to run with their children. It is also a good idea to have a parent or other adult/older child at the finish line in case the runner takes off and Mom or Dad can't keep up!

Each child will receive a medal at the finish line and a nylon drawstring backpack with a color-change cup and other prizes (while supplies last). This year, the backpacks will be given out at designated security checkpoints as families leave the race area.

NOTE ABOUT SECURITY: The Ogden Half-Marathon race committee is cooperating with the Wheeling Police Department in an effort to tighten security at this year's race events following the terrorist bombing at the Boston Marathon. A secure perimeter will be set up from 3:30-8 p.m. Friday, and there will be six checkpoints where people can enter and exit. Bags of any kind (purses, diaper bags, backpacks) as well as strollers will be prohibited inside the secure zone. For all the details, please go to www.ogdenhalfmarathonclassic.com/page/content.detail/id/500169/Leave-the-Bags-in-the-Car-on-Race-Weekend.html?nav=5095.

In addition, the Ogden Fun Run takes place Friday evening for kids 12 and under. It is a non-competitive 1-mile run that starts at the top of Wheeling Hill at 7:15 p.m. Buses will shuttle runners and their parents, if they wish, to the starting line from the finish line area at 14th and Main streets. The cost for the Fun Run is $10, and the participants receive a race T-shirt. Parents can run alongside their children for free or pay the $10 to get a T-shirt. Registration is from 10 a.m.-6:15 p.m. in the Intermodal Transportation Center (former Greyhound bus station).

As editor of the OV Parent Magazine, I have the privilege of organizing the Tot Trot and welcoming everyone to the event on Friday night. I love seeing all the kids and families having a good time. I hope the security issues will not keep you all from coming out and enjoying this annual tradition that provides a running start the summer.
