Paula Needs Our Help!
October 14, 2013 - Phyllis Sigal
Last week, Oct. 11, was the 15th anniversary of the day I left The Times Leader in Martins Ferry for my job here at The Intelligencer and News-Register.
I spent 18 and a half years there, as a reporter, bureau chief, lifestyles editor and managing editor. I learned a lot about newspaper work in those years, but more importantly, I met a lot of great people, many of whom I stay in touch with today.
One of the people I had the pleasure of working with was Paula Ginther — whose birthday coincidentally was Friday, Oct. 11.
I still picture Paula in the newsroom, camera in hand, raring to go cover that story, any story.
Paula left the newspaper some years ago to pursue other employment, but when she could, Paula would join our former T-L employee night at Ye Olde Alpha.
Now, I see her occasionally when I stop by her room at Peterson Rehabilitation Hospital.
That is why I'm writing this blog.
Last May, a severe infection made its way into her bloodstream, and then she suffered a stroke. She was Life Flighted to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where she was put into a medically induced coma for about five weeks. The stroke left her paralyzed on her left side.
In August, Paula was transferred to Peterson, where she is being treated and undergoing physical therapy.
So besides all that, now it's a money issue.
Since May, she's had no income. Her family medical leave has expired, her job has been terminated, and she's got no medical insurance at the moment.
She needs our help with her medical bills.
Two of her dear friends, Brenda Minzler and Jo Ann Welsh, have organized a chicken/steak fry fundraiser from 5-11:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at the Italian American Club in the Elm Grove section of Wheeling. Tickets are just $35 per couple or $20 for a single ticket.
There will be music, provided by Track One DJ Service, good food provided by Undo's, and door prizes and raffles. (You just might win a weekend pass to Heritage Music BluesFest '14!)
Reservations are due by Wednesday, Oct. 16. Call 304-233-1981 or 304-233-8324. Tickets will not be available at the door.
I sure hope a lot of people will rally around our good friend Paula. She's a sweetheart. And I know her kitty, Scooter, is hoping for her to return home soon.
On a good note, when Paula celebrated her 60th birthday Friday, she celebrated by triumphantly walking 125 steps, ON HER OWN. Go Paula!
So a big congrats on that feat, and here's hoping she can celebrate her 61st birthday with her T-L buddies at Ye Olde Alpha next year!
