Shop 'Til I Drop

December 7, 2007 - Phyllis Sigal
Shopping in the Ohio Valley has been an unexpected pleasure this holiday season, with new shops galore to explore ... at The Highlands, in Center Market and at the Ohio Valley Mall.

Some years I've done all my shopping on the internet or bought practically every gift at Barnes & Noble, or stocked up throughout the year at places to which I've traveled. But, this year, I decided to scour the Ohio Valley for gifts for everyone on my list.

I have had considerable success at T.J. Maxx, at Michael's and Bed, Bath & Beyond at The Highlands, which I really love!

But I particularly love seeking out the little specialty shops, such as my new favorite, ShadyGirl & Co. in the Center Market section of town. I found some great things there! And, while in that neck of the woods, check out Artworks Around Town for some one-of-a-kind items. Also, Paradox Book Store is a treasure trove of unusual books.

Stifel Fine Arts Center, this year, has gathered up great hand-crafted items by local artisans — there's jewelry, ceramics, glass, artwork, photographs and more.

I'm on my way to the Desert Beckons, another favorite store, located on Edgington Lane. There you'll find jewelry, interesting pieces of rocks and gemstones, and tie-dyed items. What a fun place that is! Hughes Design on National Road in Wheeling is another great spot.

And in downtown Wheeling, there is the Artisan Center's second floor. Oglebay's gourmet shop not far from the Mansion Museum also has some unusual items.

When you're all finished shopping, you can't beat Deal$ located on the perimeter of the Ohio Valley for $1 gift wrap and bags!

It feels good to boost the local economy. But it feels even better to have a selection of places to shop.

If I've left some out, please let me know! I still have some shopping to do!
