'Tis the birthday season

December 17, 2007 - Betsy Bethel
Do you have December birthdays in your family?

Boy, do we ever!

My mother's was Saturday, mother-in-law's is today and father's is Thursday! My niece Jenna also turns 13 today. We also have friends with b-days this month.

I could complain about having to buy extra gifts at this time of year, but when I stop to think about it, it's actually a pretty handy scenario. For one, I'm already in the shopping mindset, which is a stretch for me any other time of the year. Second, none of the three parents lives together, so I can get them similar or even identical gifts -- such as a framed Christmas photo of their granddaughter!

It's got to stink, though, having their birthday overshadowed by the gi-huge-ic birthday bash for Jesus on Dec. 25.

Very few times have we NOT lumped Christmas and birthday into one fiesta for my dad. We usually don't even get to see my mom at Christmas but she came up from Georgia last weekend to celebrate, which was wonderful. On the other hand, we see my m-i-l on an almost daily basis, so her birthday is almost always a separate deal. Tonight, we're taking her out to eat -- she requested shrimp, shrimp and more shrimp from Red Lobster. Considering she cooks for us about twice a week or more all year long, it's the least we could do!

December birthdays have to be the worst when you're a kid. My sister-in-law always makes a special effort to give her daughter a nice birthday -- often it's a girls' day out at the mall, which is exactly what they had planned for today.

I've heard of some families who solve the dilemma by giving their kids a half-birthday party in June. Hey, you can't move the date of Christmas, so why not?

I LOVE celebrating my birthday. I think I would have a real problem having a December birthday. But to my parents and mother-in-law's credit, I've never heard them complain.

Happy Birthday, everyone!
