Gas drive offs no laughing matter
January 17, 2008 - Heather Ziegler
The police reports have been dotted with reports of people pumping gas and then driving off without paying. At one station, the same driver has done this several times and an employee of the station nearly was run over when she tried to stop the scofflaw during the latest theft. This behavior will only punish the rest of the law-abiding, paying citizens. Gas stations will insist you pay before you pump which is probably the best way to do business. My husband and I followed a driver who did this once at a local station and got the license plate number of the vehicle. We took the information back to the station where the young guy behind the desk was distraught over the matter. He said he was afraid he would lose his job or have to pay the loss out of his own pocket. Eventually, the bad guy was caught. Most states will take your driver's license if you steal from the pumps. I guess it is up to all of us to do what we can --within reason and without causing harm to ourselves -- to write down the license plate number if you see someone do this. I had a police officer tell me and some of my friends when we were kids that we should carry a piece of chalk with us when we were walking to and from school. One girl had reported a man in a car had exposed himself to her during a walk home from school. The piece of chalk can be used to write the license plate number down on the sidewalk. Pretty clever, huh? Whatever it takes, let's not be taken.
