Bloody Good Film
January 21, 2008 - Phyllis Sigal
I've never seen a slasher movie.
And I don't intend to.
But, let me tell you, that if I did see a slasher movie, I'd want it to be accompanied by music by Stephen Sondheim.
OK, I don't want to offend anyone by referring to "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" as a slasher movie, but there was a lot of slashing going on and more blood than I've EVER seen on the big screen.
But it was a GREAT GREAT GREAT film! There's singing and anger and blood and dancing and killing and blood and abuse and dancing and evil and more singing. Director Tim Burton always gives his audience something different.
Johnny Depp is his usual amazing self; the story itself is really interesting, with its darkness, its tragic twists and turns; the music is beautiful. Most people will recognize "Joanna," a beautiful love song. Alan Rickman (you know him as Professor Snape from the Harry Potter films) was just as brooding as he is with Harry.
I'd certainly recommend the movie ... to those not faint of heart. And I'd recommend eating before you see the film, because you're not going to be very hungry after!
My husband is a barber (retired) and I thought about making him sleep on the couch!
FYI: -- Running Time: 1 hr. 57 min. -- Starring: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Alan Rickman and Timothy Spall. -- Directed by: Tim Burton. -- MPAA Rating: R for graphic bloody violence
