Apple. Banana. Chocolate. Coconut. Custard.
Blackberry. Cherry. Peach. Oh, my!
I needed an emergency pie not long ago, for my husband's birthday, and I was at a loss as to where to find a delicious, home-baked pie. It wouldn't be coming out of my kitchen ... well, unless Bruce baked his own birthday pie.
Someone in my office mentioned that there might be a pie place in Centre Market. So I did some online searching and found "Oliver's Pies" in Centre Market. I called to see what kind of pie I could pick up at the end of the day, and the list was long! So many choices — what to do, what to do! I told him I'd call back shortly with my decision. It didn't take long actually. Bruce loves apple pie. Blackberry and peach were my next choices. If it were my birthday, I would've chosen banana cream.
Oliver's Pies is operated by Jim Oliver, "The Pie Man," who was taught the art of pie making by his grandmother. He's been baking pies for more than 30 years.
Each pie is hand made. The fruit pies are "loaded with fruit," a fact to which I can attest. They are made with just what they should be made with: sugar, eggs, flour, fruit.
He offers 10-inch, 7-inch and mini "bite-size" pies, as well as slices — all at reasonable prices.
So, after work that day I went to Centre Market's Oliver's Pies to pick up my pie. It was heavy — so full of fruit! And it was a gorgeous pie, with its perfectly browned, domed top. I couldn't wait to dig in later that evening.
And, the icing on the cake — or the a la mode on the pie — was that there was an ice cream stand just across the way from Oliver's! So I took home a pint of rich, vanilla ice cream, made by Hershey's. Yum!
Besides the fact that the pie and the ice cream were delicious, it just felt good to have these small, specialty places at which to shop. You know you are getting a good product. I was so pleased to walk in the house with my market purchases.
Thanks, Mr. Pie Man ... I'll be back!!!
