No matter what your personal opinion is on the issue of prostitution, I am happy to see these women off the streets of downtown Wheeling. I realize that most of them are dealing with drug issues, that's obvious and I my prayers go out to them. But their presence on the streets of downtown has caused problems for other women who are walking in the downtown area, especially in the early evening hours or even early in the morning on their way to work. It's not just the prostitutes causing the problems, but the men looking to pick them up. I've watched vehicles slow down as I and other women are crossing Main Street to get to work. In the evenings, the vehicles actually drive onto downtown parking lots and garages, pick up the prostitutes and have sex at those properties. I know of one woman who was at the car wash on Main Street early one evening -- still daylight with other people around -- when she was approached by a man in a car who wanted to solicit her for sex. She said she was scared to death. I'm glad they arrested the men along with the women. That's the only way to put a crimp in the trade. And don't even get me started about earning a living tax free.
