Democrats Ban "Freedom Fries" at Convention
July 17, 2008 - Joselyn King
Both the national Republican and Democratic conventions this year are going environmentally "green."
In fact, the Democrats are going so far as to mandate that all food served at their convention next month be green -- or red, or yellow or purple/blue or white.
Organizers for the Democratic National Convention -- to take place Aug. 25-28 in Denver, Co. -- have established guidelines for caterers there that ban all fried food on premises. Food served, meanwhile, must contain at least three of the following colors: red, green, yellow, purple/blue and white.
So much for the Democrats making southern delegates feel welcome with some down home cuisine. There will be no fried chicken and dumplings at the dinner tables.
And those delegates from the Philadelphia, Pa. -- an area in a state very important to Democratic presidential hopes this year? Don't think they'll be finding any philly cheeseteaks (my personal favorite) around.
Even the most liberal Democrats from San Francisco might like some fried calamari or something.
There will be no french fries . . . or freedom fries.
Intell intern Kelsey Batten is attending the convention as a student from West Liberty State College, and she said she doesn't even like french fries.
"But I would like to think I could have them there if I wanted them," she noted.
A Denver newspaper quotes Mayor John Hicklenlooper, as terming the green convention âthe new patriotism.ã
But so much for the Democrats uniting the nation -- at least with food. Maybe they'll put as much thought into the details of cooking up a party platform as they do their dinner parties.
As for the Republicans -- who will meet Sept. 1-4 in Minneapolis, Minn. -- they are encouraging delegates to sample the cuisine at the Minnesota State Fair, which will be happening concurrently.
