Change is Good

July 24, 2008 - Heather Ziegler
Some of the proposed changes at the City-County Building sound intriguing and long overdue. The idea to move the Sheriff's tax office upstairs near the county auditor's office makes a lot of sense. If you have to get license plates you have to have your property tax receipts which sometimes requires running between floors. I like the concept of moving Wheeling City Council chambers to the first floor. It may attract a few more people to meetings in the new location in the former Sheriff's tax office. Maybe it will bring some fresh thinking to the council table as well. Plus if someone gets out of hand, the new meeting room is a lot closer to to the police department if help is needed. If you think that never happens, think again. In the 11 years I covered city council meetings, police were called into council chamber numerous times. On one occasion, an older, very confused man brought a gun into the room! On more than one occasion, a member of the public would make threatening statements toward council members or even get into shouting matches. It sometimes got pretty ugly. Change just might be good.
