Do you belong to a crime watch group? It appears that this is the trend in some communities. While I think it's great to have caring neighbors who looking out for one another I have mixed feelings about civilians actually patroling the streets. I remember the vigilantees decades ago when the Son of Sam was running the streets in New York and the fear when the Manson family was murdering people in the beds. I was scared. I kept a loaded shotgun in the house (before child arrived) and I thought about what I would do if someone tried to break in. But today's version of crime watch groups appears to be much improved as they act as the eyes and ears of the police in their daily rounds. If not for the quick actions of folks on Wheeling Island a few weeks back, a woman would have gotten away with hitting a child with her car and then leaving the scene. Other tips from concerned citizens have helped police set up and catch some drug dealers. Crime watches are a good thing but only if done correctly. Nothing should replace the expertise of our professional police officers. It would just be nice to have more of them out there.
