Kids will do this

May 12, 2009 - Heather Ziegler
I don't know a mother I've met who doesn't have a story about their children giving them the scare of their lives by disappearing -- even for just a minute. It happened to me at the old Hills Department store in Benwood many years ago. My son was looking at toys - he was about 5 years old - I looked down and he was gone. I went scrambling through the toy aisles, first just annoyed and then in sheer panic. My throat felt like it was closing as I ran from aisle to aisle. It was only about three minutes until I located him in the sporting goods aisle but I was about to lose my mind for those three minutes. Motherhood (and fatherhood) are the most tiring jobs in the world. Don't kid yourself, sometimes you are so exhausted from working and raising your family that it would be easy for a child to slip out of the house when you finally do find time to sleep. That's appears to be what happened to that mom in Martins Ferry recently. Her 3-year-old got out of the house, walked down the street and ended up in neighbor's apartment. Why the child was naked is beyond me but kids can do things to make us look really bad including taking off their clothes! I don't pretend to know all the circumstances of this latest child on the loose but please don't judge a book by its cover. Even the best intentioned parents will look away on the playground for a minute or get distracted in a store. It doesn't make them the worst parents in the world. That distinction can be saved for the parents who still smoke in the car with their children on board or who gamble away the food money.
