Chiefs Rally Past Nailers

WHEELING — Alex Grant and Thomas Beauregard each scored two goals, the Wheeling Nailers’ dormant power play connected three times in seven chances and they registered a season-high 44 shots while practically living in the offensive zone. And lost. Mike Bartlett deposited a rebound at 2:05 of overtime Saturday night on a delayed penalty call, as the Johnstown Chiefs somehow, some way escaped WesBanco Arena with a hard-to-figure 6-5 victory. ‘‘They made every one of their chances count, that’s for sure,’’ Wheeling coach Greg Puhalski said. ‘‘We’ve won a couple of overtimes and (Saturday) night we lose it. ‘‘I thought we played three pretty good periods of hockey. Just some tough breaks and bounces on their behalf.’’ The Nailers (4-7-2 — 10) thoroughly dominated for most of the night, but if one spoke in the wheel isn’t spinning that can be enough. That spoke Saturday was goaltender Adam Berkhoel, who allowed four goals on 14 shots before being pulled in favor of Jordan Parise. ‘‘Adam’s got to play better than that,’’ Puhalski said. ‘‘He’s a veteran professional and he’s been around a long time. ‘‘His game needs to be better than it has been for us. He’s aware of it and the only way he can fix it is by starting and being better in practice.’’ Wheeling battled back from a two-goal, third-period deficit on a beautiful individual effort from Aaron Clarke to score his third, and a pair of Grant lasers from the point.
