Back & Leading The Pack
Bryan Myers
The game of golf has taken Wheeling native Bryan Myers all over the country. Just last spring, he was warming up for the season by playing for a couple of months in Gainesville, Fla.
Last fall, he was playing alongside Rico Simonetti as part of a national amateur two-person, better-ball tournament in Las Vegas.
He spent five years living in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and working at Barefoot Resort, home of four championship-quality courses designed by some of the biggest names in the game.
Through it all, he says there’s no place like home. For Myers, that means a tee box somewhere on Oglebay Park’s Robert Trent Jones design.
And that’s just not completely normal because this is one tough golf course. Unlike Oglebay’s Arnold Palmer Course, which was built with the tourist in mind (read: made it easy enough to play that someone will want to come back), the Jones design has always been something of a mine field. It plays long and short. The rugged topography sometimes swallows up golf balls, other times it lets them roll forever. This course isn’t for the meek.
And Myers loves it.
In many ways, that’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.
‘‘If you talk to everybody else, they say the Jones course is so tough,’’ Myers said.
