Super Six

Somebody New Will Walk Away With Class A Title

December 4, 2008

As much as the coaches in Saturday’s West Virginia Class A championship game want to look forward, it’s hard not to look back. Weirton Madonna and Williamstown, who meet at 7 p.m. Saturday, have figured heavily in Super Six lore. Since 2003, at least one of the schools has appeared in the Wheeling Island Stadium showcase annually. But not with satisfying results. The Blue Dons, who won a state crown in 1987, returned to the island in 2004 with a senior-dominated squad, only to have their hopes dashed by what would be the first of four straight Wheeling Central championships. The season before, the Yellowjackets made their first title-game appearance since 1961, but fell to Moorefield in a muddy thriller. After falling to Madonna in the semifinals one season later, Williamstown returned to Wheeling in 2005, only to watch the Maroon Knights walk away with another first-place trophy. That scene repeated itself in 2006 and 2007. But it won’t in 2008. For the first time since 1995 – when Gilbert won the title – a school not named Wheeling Central or Moorefield will hoist the championship hardware. Madonna coach Bob Kramer and Williamstown coach Terry Smith aren’t concerned with who won’t be on the field Saturday. They’re relishing the fact they will be. ‘‘Not a lot of teams get to experience a championship game,’’ said Kramer, who guided the Blue Dons to the 2004 title game. ‘‘I want my kids to enjoy it. ‘‘Enjoy it with the focus of winning a football game.
