Pirates Pull It Out in 9th
PITTSBURGH — Lastings Milledge has a tip for Pirates’ fans already looking ahead to 2010: Start saving your money to buy playoff tickets. The left fielder was smiling when he said it Sunday after the Pirates pulled out a most improbable 6-5 victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers at PNC Park. The Pirates scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth off closer Jonathan Broxton after closer Matt Capps gave up three runs in the top of the inning. The Pirates prevented the Dodgers from clinching the National League West title as their magic number to clinch the division remained at one as second-place Colorado beat St Louis, 4-3. However, Sunday’s game was played with a playoff-like intensity and the Pirates celebrated the victory in the middle of the infield like they were heading to the postseason rather than playing out the final few days of a 17th consecutive losing season. “This is our playoffs,” Milledge, who capped the ninth-inning rally with a single, said of the four-game series that ends this afternoon. “The Dodgers have a great team and they are going to do great things in the playoffs. That’s why we were saying after the game that we’re getting ready for the 2010 postseason.” It would take a jump of near-historic proportions for the Pirates to make postseason play next autumn as they are 58-96 with eight games left and need to win five to avoid a 100-loss season.
