Hornets Return Pair of Standouts

November 25, 2009

HUNDRED — Coming off a 9-13 season, Hundred girls’ basketball coach Mike Ray is looking forward to the return of two players he considers to be among the best in the West Virginia small-school ranks. A total of three seniors are gone, but four girls who all started at some point last season return, including 5-foot-9 senior point guard Jordyn Gorby and 5-9 junior forward Raven McDiffitt. Gorby averaged 17 points a night as a junior, while McDiffitt dropped in 12 a game as a sophomore. Juniors Macy Woods (5-6, forward) and Lindsay Burley (5-11, center) will be joined by sophomore Shayna Tedrow (5-9, forward) in rounding out the starting lineup. ‘‘I feel that Gorby and McDiffitt are both two of the best small-school players in the OVAC and the state,’’ Ray said. ‘‘Both are already receiving some college interest which gives them even more to play for. ‘‘We are very good on the perimeter, but we still need to develop a little bit more of an inside game. We are back in the OVAC now and that is something that I am really looking forward to.’’ The other six players who will be battling for playing time include senior Rachel Ashcraft (5-7, forward) sophomores Haley Hayes (5-4, guard) and Taylor Lind (6-0, center) and freshmen Katie Tennant (6-1, center), Emily Ebert (5-6, forward) and Oshana Topp (5-5, guard). Gone from last season’s squad are Nancy Cumberledge, Chelsea Kuhn and Kayla Simpson.
