Philadelphia DA warns against New Year gunfire

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham is warning again that gunshots are no way to celebrate the arrival of the New Year.

Abraham plans a news conference Wednesday morning. She’s giving her annual assurance that she will prosecute those who say Happy New Year by firing shots in the air when midnight arrives. Police say they received more than 240 reports of gunfire between 10 p.m. last New Year’s Eve and 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

Officer Peter Krimski, a firearms examiner, says a 9mm handgun bullet fired upward at an angle can go more than a mile and still be traveling at potentially deadly velocity.

Joining Abraham is 21-year-old Joe Jaskolka, who was struck in the head by a celebratory bullet in 1998. He’s undergone more than 20 operations since then. He now uses a wheelchair.
