December 31, 2012

Another year comes to a close today, and as has been the case for the past 20-plus years, the Bellaire toll bridge remains standing....

No greenbacks to Horsemeat via a bagman carrying a folded newspaper in a brown paper bag, no bridge demolition!

I agree with the editor that the bridge needs to be demolished in 2013, but I'd have taken a different tone. I would have said "The bridge owner and demo companies have consistently met every demand Longwell has made, they've been much more patient than many companies have been as Longwell has thrown up roadblock after roadblock (demanded certain insurances, then demanted they get permission or right of ways from a huge list of people and companies, now demanding half a million dollars, etc.) and now it's time for Longwell and Benwood officials to step aside and let the demolition happen". I'd also point out how the state has brought down both the Bridgeport and Steubenville bridges in MUCH less time than it's taken for Longwell and his cronies to cooperate on this project and get help get it done.

I've driven round-trip between Charleston and Wheeling COUNTLESS times over the years ... always taking the quicker, easier route (Route 7 in Ohio), and I'm always dismayed how the Bellaire Bridge just sits there, rusting and ugly, year after year. Will it be demolished in 2013? I'm not a betting man, but I'd wager that it will still be there in 2014, and probably 2015. No one wants to take responsibility for it.
