They say agencies have made it a top priority, yet we have the highest rate of death from abuse in 2011. Which is it.

I will tell you that it is not top priority. As a mandated reporter, DHHR is inept in investigating reports. I have seen parents leave the state with kids knowing an investigation will occur eventually-parents know they have 60-90 days. That is unacceptable.

B;ooming, I agree with you, but understand that what DHHR is doing is trying to live within an inadequate budget. It is expensive to properly protect children. Proper investigations, services to families and Court actions cost a lot more money than we are willing to spend. Furthermore, we don't pay CPS worker's well enogh to keep the good ones from going elsewhere, or into the private sector. The Editor is right on this one. Its up to all of us as taxpayers to get our priorities straight.

"DHHR has an inadequate budget", "it is expensive to protect children","up to all of us as taxpayers to get our priorities straight". Complete blindness. As long as we as a society fund, endorse, encourage, and promote the killing of our children in the womb, we will never be able to "protect" them.

I agree Impact, but if we are not willing hire enough people that are competent, then can we really say it is a priority.

Clearly CPS workers are underpaid and overworked. Left untreated at this level, they cycle continues. I am also in favor of keeping the families together when at all possible.

Bloomin, I didn't mean to sat it was a priority, but rather should be. If you're interested, this op ed was apparently prompted by ab article or editorial in the Charleston Daily Mail by Ry Rivard on 12/31.
