Early flu season fuels debate over paid time off for ill employees

January 21, 2013

NEW YORK (AP) — Sniffling, groggy and afraid she had caught the flu, Diana Zavala dragged herself in to work anyway for a day she felt she couldn’t afford to mis....

And who is going to pay for the sick time used? How about a payroll deduction to EARN the sick leave before you can use it?? None earned, none paid for. PERIOD.

Answer to first question, the employee. Raises will be reduced to pay for this, bonuses probably a thing of the past. Thus, penalizing the highly productive worker.

If employees are guaranteed 10 days of sick time, they will be sick at least 10 days a year.

WVEXPAT, that is SICK (pun intended)!

No wonder Multinational companies cannot get employees from Europe to take a promotion to work in the USA!

And, Oh BTW. the ENTIRE EUROPEAN ECONOMY in the trash bin going down while the USA struggles to stay even or get a little better.

I wonderwhy?????

SOCIALISM: FAIL!

Since we're heading toward a European style government I'm sure the following is on the way soon. From the NY TImes, BRUSSELS — For most Europeans, almost nothing is more prized than their four to six weeks of guaranteed annual vacation leave. But it was not clear just how sacrosanct that time off was until Thursday, when Europe’s highest court ruled that workers who happened to get sick on vacation were legally entitled to take another vacation."

Got sick on your vacation just take another!!

Who pays self-employed workers for their sick days?

Perhaps we need another Government agency to administer Government-provided sick day benefits to all workers. Because only the Government has the financial resources and bureaucratic expertise to efficiently fund and manage such a program.

Of course it’s unfair to the 22 MILLION unemployed that only currently employed workers would be paid for their sick days, so those benefits would also be paid to the unemployed anytime they’re “sick.”

And since this new Sick Pay Department would require thousands of new Government employees to administer, so think of all the jobs this measure would create?

Don’t think of this new "benefit" as an entitlement. Think of it as “spreading the wealth around.” Which, as the Wealth Spreader in Chief says, “is good for everybody.” mmm mmm mmm

dawraith, when i accept a job working for someone i myself expect me to show up for work everyday possible.if someone worked for me i would expect the same from them.if the sick days where i work were unpaid,i would doubt that some of these people would be taking off like they do.the abusers make this a bad situation.they get paid for being at home while the rest of us are holding down the fort.sick or not.had i not been wearing a helmet during some of the crashes i had on the way, there would have been some days that i wouldn't have made it to work.i tore a few of these up.carrying a 50lb. toolbox was usually a trip after one of these incidents.i thought that i would be dead by the time i hit 20[i was one of the fast guys around here]and here i am approaching 60.reminds me of the old saying"if i knew that i was going to live this long i'd have taken better care of myself".i can still outwork the young people.

we have paid sick days where i work.lots of people abuse them.they take off sick and come back with a new hairdo.the boss knows that if i report off that i must have one foot in the grave.my doctor knows the same thing.i've wrecked motorcycles on the way to work and tied rags around the bloody parts and still worked.sometimes i could barely walk but kept on going.as i've gotten older i don't do that anymore.takes too long to heal.

Feels like we've gone back in time...

I've never had a job without sick leave...

This is what we need--to have people work sick and spread the flu or anything else...

Where is the CDC on this, I wonder?

When we have a Pandemic--and we loose a third of the world population--maybe someone will take notice!!

And--perhaps I exaggerate! Good luck to us all...
