Thanks for the advice Wrath, but I already have a masters degree, I am self employed, and I am past the child bearing years. I was responding to your previous comment about women having a "shot" if they dont have children. Since women are the only gender that can bear children, and their financial independence according to your source, is dependent on their being childless, then attempts to prevent women from having abortions is just another attempt at oppression.

Walksabout, I used a coal miner as an example, and I know a few women who have competed for "mens" jobs quite successfully. You are right, mens jobs require strength and they are exposed to crappy circumstances, so are many positions that are primarily women but with a fraction of the pay.

Impossible to compare the CRAP of a job, (physical, mental, dangerous, etc ) but the person has a choice. Steel mills are done and coal mines will be too before long. I am not anit male, just pro female=like to see al

really low on issues to protest . Somebody is always paid more. So what ? some are paid more than they are worth. You won't ever be underpaid if you hold out for the exact job that tickles all yer fancies.

1/31/13:

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC)- A ‘Paycheck Fairness Act’ introduced in Congress last week would require employers to show pay disparity is related to job-performance and prohibit employer retaliation for sharing salary information with coworkers.

Senator Barbara A. Mikulski and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, both Democrats, said their legislation is aimed at closing the pay gap between men and women and would also address loopholes in the 1963 Equal Pay Act.

Another DUMMORAT bill to FORCE business to OUTSOURCE to China and Mexico!!!!

Well Bloomin you have a point. My experience it that women with a college degree can OFTEN go further and/or get promoted quicker TODAY because industry is under PRESSURE to show woman in managment and high level positions.

So they have an unfair advantage over men IF they dedicate themselves to a career.

If they take time off to raise a family, they are likely PUNISHED.

But you have a point, the problem is many of the high paying jobs that do NOT require a college degree just require a LOT of physical strength and endurance. Like working 12 hour shifts outdoors in local CRAP weather.

OR climbing 40 story high rise welding steel.

Crawling around thousands of feet below ground controlling heavy equipment.

Sorry, that is just "man" jobs.

STRATEGY: get an education and USE the "promote female" white collar advantage.

I am noticing some snide, sexist, steriotypical remarks. This is 2013 not 1913. Get with the times. You "remarkers" need to come to the party. If a woman can do the job of a man or if a man can do the job of a woman, then equal pay for that job is in order.

Well if I happen to be a 100 pound woman with a high school diploma and brains, tell me how to earn as much as a coal miner does and get the benefits the coal miner gets?

Please name me one job that does not involve removing clothing?

Most Women do not have the physical ability to do HIGH STEEL, heavy outdoor gas lines, etc. that pay the big bucks.

Also women often do not have the seniority of men in white collar jobs because they take off time to give birth and raise children.

Otherwise they seem to be paid equally for white collars jobs compared with equal education and seniority.

This is a poorly written article!

The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act deals with the issue of EQUAL PAY for EQUAL WORK.

The article goes on to cite census data with regards to the "annual median salary" for men and women in WV and OH to help bolster the writer's claim of continued disparity of pay. PERHAPS A DISPARITY IN "ANNUAL MEDIAN SALARY" EXIST BECAUSE THESE MEN ARE PERFORMING JOBS THAT PAY MORE DUE TO RISK OR A CERTAIN SKILL SET THAT WOMEN DO NOT WISH TO PURSUE, or for some other reason NOT due to discriminatory practices.

The articles writer is comparing apples to oranges.

This new law was no secret when it was passed.ENFORCE THE LAW! Any company found to cheating women on their pay and compensation needs to pay a hefty fine, CEO's need JAIL time, and anyone who knows that a company is stealing from a woman's paycheck and fails to report it to the authorities should do jail time also. If women can now be sent into combat zones then they deserve the same pay that men earn. Jail time is the only answer!!!!

This is so true and needs to change. The inequality is unacceptable in this day and age. Good for her for filing suit, and glad she is in a place that she can earn the same wage as men. Women need to fight for these inequities in many aspects besides pay.
