Close them. This is another example of taxpayers subsidizing the wealthy. How often have you gluten your plane to Wheeling Airport?

I'm a pilot. I have flown into and out of the airport on numerous (hundreds) times. I have also flown into and out of many other airports with much more traffic than HLG that do not have control towers. Believe me. I know. Wheeling Ohio Co. Airport does not need a manned control tower. Never has. Never will. It's just a Bob Byrd pork barrel carry-over.

hmmmm, "Tominack said there are about 17,000 airports across the nation, and approximately 450 of them have air traffic control towers."

Mojo has his pilot license...how many readers on this site have a pilot license?

Every time Obama does not get his way, which is unlimited spending of our kids futures, he goes on television and says he may not be able to send out next months social security checks or some other horrendous thing..meaning the people trying to get some control over spending are really mean, huh? So who makes the decision of what gets closed? The President does. So they trot out these scare tactics and fire up "the rich guys are being mean again." And there goes the fearful chanting from the dumb and easily bullied. Obama has done this twice threatening to not be able to pay the troops and their dependents...but that is one of the things he cannot stop. The rest of this is just oatmeal for the stupid. Speaking of rich guys, how many people use the OC airport? Can you afford a plane and do you need to have a tower for private planes? No you don't. Though a lifelong Dem, I admit Obama sees his job the same way Chavez and Castro see theirs, he loves power.

Are Joe and Barry telling us that a mere 2-1/2% budget cut is immediately going to wreak all this havoc in a government that is riddled with waste up to their ears? Oh come on. Give me a break!

We are being treated like sheep in a pen being kept in fear by wolves nipping at us through the fence. On one hand our freedoms (2nd amendment included) are being stripped from us every day to make us defenseless and on the other hand we must pay more taxes to make the wolves back off. The sheep in my pen are getting sick of it.

The truth is, we need budget cuts to protect this country from total disaster for our children.

Show some leadership, Barry, you idiot, and rather than being out on the campaign trail blaming and fear mongering, figure out the best way to cut the 2-1/2% without shutting down half of the control towers in the country. My God !

as long as us older people keep our kids informed that this is not the way to run a government and these kids pay attention to us we should at least be able to keep them from being brainwashed by these incompetents[this might be a brainwashing in it's own way but you do what you gotta do].i know that our parents have to be turning over in their graves.so's george washington.and everybody else that fought for freedom.manchin,manson,whatever.the threats no longer faze us.

Just more idol tactics to gin up fear amongst the American people.

When will the folks catch on to fear-monger political games just so the politicians can swoop in at the 11th hour and continue to spend us into oblivion?

The FAA's share of the cutback is approx $600 million out of their $15,172 million budget (Google Dept of Transporation 2013 Fiscal budget). So if the traveling public bears the brunt, it would only be due to the FAA's spending priorities. From USA Today, "•The amount of money spent on low-priority projects hit a record $507 million in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30. That's nearly five times the amount in 1998, when the FAA established a new ranking system for airport projects. •More than $2 billion in low-priority funds has gone to airports used mostly by private jets and piston-engine planes, including $700 million for terminals. Pellston Regional Airport in Michigan used $7.5 million in federal funds to build a terminal with stone fireplaces and cathedral ceilings. The airport averages three departures a day."

If the traveling public is affected it's only because the FAA prefers spending money on the politically connected!! But then again that is the Liberal way, so yes we'll probably see delays at the airport!!

I find it somewhat hypocritical that the President accuses Republicans of not bargaining to protect private jet owners, yet threatens airport dysfunction while the FAA subsidizes unprofitable regional airports (i.e. the home of private jet owners).

Citizen math: Spend $50,000 this year and $50,000 next year equals no increase/no decrease in spending.

Government math: Spend $50,000 this year and $50,000 next year equals a spending CUT by evil white males who hate minorities, seniors, children, kittens and private jet owners.

I don't think the histrionics over a 1.2% cut in projected increases has anything at all to do w sequestration. I think Obama is blowing things wildly out of proportion to set up ALL future budget/fiscal/economic issues on those dastardly Republicans! Just think about it!! High unemployment! Republicans allowing sequestration! Debt problems ditto! Poverty, crime, Grandma not getting her meds, dog died, STD's ALL because of sequestration! Nothing will be Obama's fault after Friday!!

I recall my first landing at the Wheeling OC Airport. I had been piloting a small plane from the midwest crossing Ohio in route to the airport for several hours. I had refueled along the way, so I could have flown on to another field. When I reached the Ohio Valley the air was thick with smoke, dust and fumes from the mills. Visibility was often less than one mile. I dropped low to maintain ground visibility. If I had not been familiar with the area and didn't have a radio beacon to follow I possibly would have been lost.

On my first cross-country solo flight, my landing gear was frozen, and I hadn't eaten all day. My dog, flying right seat, had to pee and was scratching at the door handle. Just as I was turning a hard right, the door flung open and we both fell right out of the cockpit. Luckily we were over the OC airport. The plane, my dog, and I all floated down to earth on an imaginary cloud of smoke, dust, and fumes. I was glad to be alive. My dog was really happy to find some grass.
