March 3, 2013

For decades West Virginians have followed national trends and, in effect, thrown money and fads at public education in an attempt to improve it....

WV tax payers (state and local spending combined) pony-up $6.1 billion per year for the public school system. WV has 282,000 public school students! So per student spending is $21,000+ per year.....these figures do not count federal spending for WV public schools.

Spending on public schools has more than tripled since 1960, adjusted for inflation, yet, test scores, both in real terms and vs. the rest of the world, have stagnated and declined, respectively.

Why, then, should we continue to throw money at the problem? If the huge increase in spending has not improved results, our ROI has declined significantly.

Maybe it is time to switch to optional vouchers. Each kid gets a voucher for X dollars. Each kid's parent is responsible for securing food and transportation for their child. Schools have to compete for students (customers). No more captive hostages just because the reside in a particular town or city.

Make the schools work to compete for students!

Our university system is the envy of the world for this reason.

Our primary/secondary systems? Eh, not so much.

To really reform American education we must make school attendance worthwhile. Today a high school diploma means very little. It will not get you into college and jobs [where they exist] don't really care. Students don'y BUY-IN to the school experience because they get so little out of it. WE have debased the meaning of a diploma. Students with great scores still cant afford college and jobs still hire out of state and friends. Vouchers only help the well off [who really don't need the help] and where do students go to spend them. Catholic schools are becoming extinct, Private schools cost more than some colleges.
