When you feel bad about the quality of students in America, you need only look toward young people like this one to see that education is available and intelligence is there to be fostered. The problem with so many young people is that their parents are indifferent and pay little attention to what their kids do in school or out. This fellow found a Phd mentor and is doing research at a very high level. Education and special emphasis in the sciences or math is out there, you have to want it. If we had more students fascinated with school and less fascinated with emulating a bankrupt social culture we would be better. Bet this student has total support and encouragement from his parents. Compare that to parent supported activities on trial in Steubenville and its easier to see that parenting is important. Its not always easy but its important if you want to see your kids succeeding and not in jail. Parenting is the toughest thing anyone of else will ever do, and many opt out.
