Eye witnesses to the rupture reported a rusty colored plume rising from the cite. Well, since it didn't ignite, it couldn't have been smoke. But it could have been corrosion from inside the pipe knocked loose from the rapid release of pressure. Most all of these industrial accidents can be attributed to someone trying to save a buck - like cheap steel pipe, insufficient coatings on the inside and / or incompetent welding procedures. I wonder if we'll ever know the truth?
