wRat - I can't prove/disprove your 'statistics' but I do remember Clinton and his love for golf. I worked with a bunch of Admirals and Generals back then and they, having big bucks, belonged to the Army-Navy Country Club where they golfed (usually while I worked). Anyhow, they seethed as President Clinton and his Secret Service escorts found the club to be a close and excellent course for BJ Clinton to golf. He'd show up no-notice, did not pay the very high club dues, and 'played through' those on the course. I don't think the Washington Press even knew of his many short trips to that course (very close to downtown DC).

Clueless is wrong again.

The President has played more rounds of gold than the last 8 presidents combined, and only Eisenhower at 800 and Woodrow Wilson, another {bleep}-OFF Demorat at 1200 have him beat.

His average is 110 which says he is BETTER at playing golf than being President!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

atoddh:

I disagree.

Just because the county has more money from gas shale production doesn't mean the county taxpayers should allow this to be spent on the airport.

The users of the airport - the pilots and plane owners - should pay for the tower.

No one else.

Stop using federal tax dollars for local projects.

If it is important to the locals let them pay for it.

If Ohio County airport really believes safety is an issue they can fix it.

Just charge a landing fee like other airports do.

With 38000 flights per year (if you believe it) then $10 each would be more than enough to run the tower.

If you charged what Charleston does you would have an extra $1million which is more than the airports entire budget.

Charge the pilots who are the users not the taxpayers.

I think it's a mistake to have Wheeling Airport on the 'list' to close the control tower. First off, the recent improvements in runway improvement and lighting upgrades are in, done and available. These are significant flight safety enhacements. Now, secondly...Wheeling is well into decline as a city but the airport has a crucial location. Aircraft troubles resulting in immediate need to land happen right after takeoff and on landing approach. Wheeling is 35 air miles from Pittsburg and a little over 100 miles from Cleveland. If a flight from those centers needs to come down FAST...Wheeling is suddenly very important. Thirdly, then President Bush, current Vice President Biden and Candidate Romney all landed at Wheeling airport in the recent past. Indeed, the 'gateway' to the upper Ohio Valley of Eastern Ohio and Northern Panhandle West Virginia is Wheeling Airport.

Thus, it's not that Wheeling is 'sleepy hollow' that is a relevant criteria...it's the location, location, location

I guess Murtha never got over his WV roots of being 'penny wise and pound foolish'.

Like Murtha, I got my gall bladder out at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Not a great outcome as the surgeons in 'General Surgery' were mediocre. I still have issues but not as serious as Murtha..his operation for gall bladder removal (a not complicated surgery) KILLED HIM. Point is, he was well over 65 and had MediCare. He could have gone anywhere. I do feel bad about his fate even though he was a corrupt politician (they all are, so he was not special in that regard).

atoddh, Believe me "I get it"! The CBO (Congressional Budget Office) has been telling Congress for the last 25+ years that in excess of 50% of all grants and loans have resulted in fraud. 500 billion per year is what your goberment "gives" away for these programs! 250 billion is 50%....I just discovered how we can cut goberment spending by 250 billion!

If Wheeling used 100 million for "other than intended" people should be paying it back and in jail....

Murray and Chesapeake - both now in Ohio - use the Airport. The flight school may be gone now. The recent very elaborate improvements will be somewhat blunted now by the Tower closure.

The Couty should have enough gas money to fund the Tower. This would be appropriate, if there was a manufacturing/training operation there in the future. The Airport is a jewel for industrial development.

whgfailure, so what if the POTUS plays more golf than Tiger Wood?

Maybe THAT plus his $1 BILLION vacation to India or Joe Biden's $585,000 one night hotel bill look just a little out of place in a country with 49 MILLION on Food Stamps and Chronic 14% unemployment?

But maybe that is just me . . . . .

A couple people made out well. The WJU guy has departed.(Actually he never left the Eastern Panhandle.)

Regional airports are often crony capitalism's favorite recipient! Take Johnstown, Pa for example, from Yahoo Finance "The Murtha Airport in Johnstown, Pa., is a prime example of taxpayer spending that refuses to die. Representative John Murtha steered some 150 million of taxpayer dollars to this eponymous airport over the last decade and despite the fact he died more than a year ago, the money keeps on coming. Three years ago, we first visited the tiny airport, and found a monument to pork barrel spending: An airport with a $7 million air traffic control tower, $14 million hanger, and $18 million runway big enough to land any airplane in North America. For most of the day, the only thing this airport doesn't have is airplanes. We flew there on one of three flights that arrive there daily, all of them from Washington D.C. About half the cost of every ticket, $100, is paid by American taxpayers, a subsidy Congress voted to renew just this past February."
