McKinley is a proponent of reduced Federal spending. He is getting his way on this. The Commission has for years ignored proposals for Airport projects that would have created a need for the Tower.

Well Joe Biden spent $595,000.00 for ONE NIGHT at a PARIS 5 star hotel this month.

Maybe the leadership team in the White House could Lead by Example when it comes to cost cutting in government????

In Dec., 2012, our idiot president takes family to Hawaii for xmas vacation; he comes back a week earlier than family due to "fiscal cliff". Just think what it cost us taxpayers to operate Air Force One per trip and then double it for this vacation. It's costing us taxpayers sixty million a year to operate the White House; a lot of jobs could be saved with a little thoughtful thinking by this tinker bell president.

The folks in government are acting like the sequester and the "cuts" (actually reductions in the amount of INCREASE) in spending is the end of world.

Welcome to the private sector has been dealing with for the past several years!

Wait til the perpetual Quantitative Easing's ends and the inflation begins. The folks at the FED started and are continuing this disaster, but don't know how to get out of it.

Probably never should have been a manned tower in the first place.

"Planes, including airliners, can continue to fly to airports without towers. Most of the roughly 5,000 U.S. public airports don’t have towers. Instead of being guided by controllers, pilots radio each other to coordinate landings and takeoffs, according to FAA procedures."

wrath, I thought you wanted less goberment spending?

My tax/fee liability for local, state and federal goberment is likely to be 58%+ this year....Cut spending to the bone and lower my taxes/fees to 20% of my income and I will "stimulate" the economy!

There's millions of taxpayer dollars available for the Muslim Brotherhood and the nation of Jordan ($200 million announced yesterday) but nothing for air safety in the U.S. Got it.

The Ohio County airport logs more than 100 flights per day, 365 days per year?

Does that include the military flights?

The airport does not have a manned tower at night so I don't know why they would need one during the day.

With new technologies, sensors at the airport should be able to give pilots all of the information they need.

This comment was posted at another news site reporting on these closures, fwiw: The objective is most likely to leave smaller airports open to drug and terrorist smuggling. The smuggling, or media reports of, would give Obama / Napolitano a reason to station drones and her people, with armored vehicles, and unlimited weapons through out this country.

With the loss of Byrd and Mollohan (on Appropriations),Federal money to WV is drying up in a big way.

The Airport had lots of potential for development. The focus will now be on Clarksburgh which already has a substantial aero space establishment.

The Wheeling powers chose to use Byrd's power and money for Downtown development vs job creating projects. The end result is empty lots and debt to pay for them.Downtown is worse off.

Byrd's money was also used at WJU which now faces all sorts of Federal charges for fraud with the money given.

Atoddh, every pizzant airport in the USA is losing control tower, every port under 150,000 T&L.

Florida lost the most at 14 tower closures.

The airport lost it's importance when they stopped commercial flts to Pitt. years ago. As for the military, they are supposed to be trained for "Bare Field Operations" where no tower is needed. They pay wages to show that Wheeling is important. A waste of money.

atoddh, so your answer is more wasteful spending?

"The Wheeling powers chose to use Byrd's power and money for Downtown development vs job creating projects. The end result is empty lots and debt to pay for them.Downtown is worse off.

Byrd's money was also used at WJU which now faces all sorts of Federal charges for fraud with the money given."

Debt and wasteful spending will be a "ball and chain" for many years to come!

Regional airports are often crony capitalism's favorite recipient! Take Johnstown, Pa for example, from Yahoo Finance "The Murtha Airport in Johnstown, Pa., is a prime example of taxpayer spending that refuses to die. Representative John Murtha steered some 150 million of taxpayer dollars to this eponymous airport over the last decade and despite the fact he died more than a year ago, the money keeps on coming. Three years ago, we first visited the tiny airport, and found a monument to pork barrel spending: An airport with a $7 million air traffic control tower, $14 million hanger, and $18 million runway big enough to land any airplane in North America. For most of the day, the only thing this airport doesn't have is airplanes. We flew there on one of three flights that arrive there daily, all of them from Washington D.C. About half the cost of every ticket, $100, is paid by American taxpayers, a subsidy Congress voted to renew just this past February."

dying:missed my point.Wheeling squandered their Byrd money. The I79 folks used to to build jobs. This worked for them.Wheeling has nothing to show but empty lots Downtown and Federal charges at WJU.It was 100 million or so down the hole.Who was in charge?Who set the policy? A couple people made out well. The WJU guy has departed.(Actually he never left the Eastern Panhandle.)
