Remember that the North Korean people are not our enemey. They are kept in bondage and spoonfed lie after lie. In fact, they are told by the North Korean state media that US soldiers cut babies from wombs with bayonets and that we eat children!

The NK government is embarassed because, like the Muslim nations surrounding Israel, a neighbor has been successful in the same conditions and region. It makes it difficult to continue the false propaganda and lies.

Cream Of Sum Yung Guy is merely trying to gain support from his freezing, starving people. In any conflict (and assuming China does not deny access to the area), the US could destroy North Korea in a matter of a few days. Nuclear boomers and B2 stealth bombers assure that.

If action is needed by the U S, I would imagine it would be something like "Shock And Awe" minimizing civilian casualties. Even so , hundreds or thousands could be killed. China would probably let the U S do just enough before they put a verbal stop to all action. It would be interesting to see how much our (US) militaey has advanced since Iraq.

Had the U.S. done what was needed to WIN the Korean War, we wouldn't be having this discussion. You don't win wars by stopping at a fixed point (38th Parallel) and telling the enemy you want "peace." You WIN a war by destroying the enemy. Communists and terrorists don't want "peace"... they want to kill you.

Shemp, you are one sick f&&& to want to kill tens of thousands of innocent men, women and children, who are enslaved by a real dictator, in order to see how our military has progressed in the last ten years.

Displaced, the North Korean Government isn't looking for anything. They are comfortable and don't give a rat's rear end about their suffering people. And please quit telling us to "wake up". We're awake, whether we agree with you or not. If you keep on using that tired old phrase, you'll put us to sleep.

impact: You are naive if you don't think this is just another attempt to extort the U.S. into giving them more aid in exchange for "scaling back" their nuclear weapons program. They, along with Iran, Pakistan, Egypt, Sudan, Lebanon, etc., etc., realize that the U.S. is little more than a toothless, clawless tiger too afraid of negative press from the "world community" to have its tough talk mean anything. I've lost count of the number of U.S. backed U.N. sanctions that regimes like N. Korea and Iran just scoff at. We are not taken seriously when don't put any backing to our increasingly meaningless words.

Oh, and ..... WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!!!!

If anything comes of this, it will give us the chance to get rid of military equipment and buy new. This has happened in all recent wars. It creates jobs and income, which is what this country wants.

Communists tend to stick together so when you consider that China, and Russia would likely choose THEIR side in a war against the United States, this COULD escalate quickly and involve MAJOR nuclear powers if not handled properly

Make no mistake, the US WILL respond if a major offensive to the south occurs or if any action is taken against Japan

The trouble with THIS administration is they would wait for UN approval and MANY lives would be lost as a result

As I read the comments here (14 of them) some were attempts to be humorous, some were based on zero historical knowledge of how this situation came into being and the rest were just plain stupid.

In short, in 1950 geography of the Korean pennsula worked against us. The American public demand we demobilize after WWII (mostly American wives & mothers), the unified communistic power of then allies Soviet Union and China, and plain naive stupidity all led to a divided Korea and invasion of the South by the Soviet/Chinese backed North. We were quickly pushed nearly into the sea on the South coast near Pusan...managed by MacArthur's brilliant and dangerous invasion at Inchon cutting communist forces in half...undone by over a million trumpet blowing Chinese 'volunteers' that pushed us back to the original divide at 38th parallel. No way we could win fighting millions of expendable Chinese at huge cost and 6000 miles from our shores. We had to settle for a 'truce'. Judge not history..

Our goal in Korea has NEVER been to win in the initial stages of a conflict. In fact, our 25,000-strong force stationed there would most likely be overrun in the event of a massive sneak attack by the North. However, the ROK forces are tough and that might not happen.

China is always a wild card, especially with their latest moves intended to deny US carrier groups access to the western Pacific.

As for MacArthur's "brilliance"-spare me. MacArthur was one of the most pompous, overrated commanders in the history of warfare. For one example, see his propensity to freeze under pressure.

Ragnar - "As for MacArthur's "brilliance"-spare me."

He was pompous and bullheaded to a fault. It cost him his command and his reputation.

HOWEVER, He conceived and implemented possibly the greatest sea invasion in Naval history. He overruled the Joint Chiefs of Staff and all the other woosy naysayers and risked a surprise end run around communist forces by landing his troops at Inchon which has the second highest tides in the world. The others aid we would be shooting ducks on the mud flats as the tide receded...but his timing was perfect. The communist army was cut in half, no access to supplies, ammo or even safe retreat. He reclaimed South Korea in one fell swoop. Elsewise, we would have lost all of Korea for keeps. Sadly, he thought Mao was not crazy enough to commit his army to rescue the North. Well, Mao called them 'volunteers' and it was brutal (see the butcher of our wounded when evacuating the Chosen Reservoir). Gen Marshall told Truman to FIRE that

They are mostly BARK but in the past they punish THEIR NEIGHBORS and the INNOCENT to show what a tough bully they are.

THAT is the danger. I don't seriously think they have a missile and warhead that can HIT the US yet, but I also believe they could hit our bases in Korea or hit their neighbor and OUR ALLY South Korea

THEN WHAT?

I think we need to cruise or B2 their nuclear facility just to show the barking chihuahua that the BIG ALPHA DOG REALLY is in the HOUSE.

This guy is hoping to have Obama give him one of those great big golf tournament checks like those we have been handing out to the oil rich ME governments. It happened when Clinton was in office and Kim is hoping to impress his people and his military with a "victory" over the US. There is no reason to wait, and most likley if we take him out or look like we are going to, his military will probably remove him. The worst thing would be to do what Clinton did which is give him millions of US dollars and, as Clinton did, give him a million barrels of oil from the US strategic oil reserves if the old Kim would stand down. That Clinton did that, is why we are facing this now. But the guy is talking about hitting the US mainland and faking attacks...no reason to wait send him about 200 cruise missiles and a week of bombing. Obama does not have the stuff to do that, he is obsessed with installing fundamental Islamic regimes in the Middle East, and for some bizarre reason, armi

MacArthur took the obvious route at Inchon. The North Koreans weren't even defending the coast! They had outrun their supply lines and any West Point graduate worth his salt would know what to do.

MacArthur opposed the use of the A-Bomb, favoring instead a massive invasion of Japan that would have extended the war by at least a year and cost 1 million + American dead.

MacArthur had EIGHT HOURS WARNING about Pearl Harbor, yet, let his air force and navy get caught without effort.

He stashed supplies and soldiers all over the Phillipines, which cost the defenders valuable food and ammo that could have helped them to hold off the Japanese invasion.

He ridiculed the Australian army and butchered soldiers in a poorly chosen battle in New Guinea.

He demanded a sideshow invasion of the Phillipines to satisfy his own ego.

He abanoned his soldiers on Corregidor.

I could go on and on!

Ragnar - 'MacArthur took the obvious route at Inchon. '

Oh so? 'Obvious route' eh. Well, you're entitled to your view. I have mine.

When I was at Wolmi in '63 (it looked pretty much like it was during the war back then) I would not have agreed it was 'obvious'. Most of the fellow officers I worked with back then (Korean & U.S. - and I do speak Korean & Japanese and was assigned to those countries 63-76, except for a year in Viet Nam). Consensus then (by those who were there back then) was MacArthur was flawed with arrogance but none-the-less he was the leading military leader of the times. Oh, and he was number one in his West Point Class since you seem impressed by that school.

the current siduation is not as it was in 1950...in the early 50s the USA helped save the south from extermination...currently the average person in the north is worse off then 1950...millions facing starvation...a Govt and army in charge with nukes...any food aide goes to the army and the Govt. with average people starving..the masses cannot revolt..no strenght and no weapons...at some point the army may go with the threats, when they become so hungry like the masses and nothing left to loose...hate to see the south attacked with nukes, but waht will stop it.If the north does attack, there will be little left of them when the response comes back to them, but they may not be thinking that death is so bad compaired to starving...
