Reject Obama CDBG Change

April 21, 2013

To judge by the White House’s own statement, President Barack Obama’s administration does not consider aid to Wheeling and cities like us to be “optimally targeted” use of federal funds....

folks:recall the City bought all the buildings for the proposed phantom Victorian Mall with Fed money per Aderholt. The City then sold them at a loss. They then repurchased them for pahantom "develoment." They then borrowed money to demolish the same buildings. Now there are empty lots. This has cost milions. No jobs created. No new construction on the lots as promised.Insane squandering.

Why should the Feds give them more money??

Why should the Feds invest in a loser like Wheeling? The investments thus far have not reversed the decline. In fact, Downtown is much worse off than before the millions of Fed money put in.

Hoopie is correct about West Virginia's perpetual beggar status. Where she is wrong, though, is the spending flowing to "red" states. This spending includes defense spending and military bases. It stands to reason that Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, Missouri, Kentucky, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina would "receive" boatloads of federal spending.

Fort Bragg NC is home to the 82nd Airborne and the US Army Special Forces.

Fort Benning, GA is home to the 75th Ranger Regiment.

If Hoopie is worried about the "red state" handouts, I would suggest that she immediately decline the protection and defense afforded to all Americans-in ALL states-by the world's greatest war machine.

Public works projects will not work. Nobody wants to give up their unemployment, wellfare, food stamps etc.

This has absolutely nothing to do with fiscal responsibility and everything to do with politics.

Does anybody in their right mind actually believe Obama & his minions give a rats behind about cutting government spending? Get real. This is nothing more than bad old- fashioned politics.

Embrace liberalism & propose public works projects with pedestrian features and bicycle lanes, etc. Throw some bicycle sharrows on the pavement. Remove parking and install some bike lanes, bicycle boxes, and add bicycle detection to the traffic signals.

The 'greenie way' will get the governments attention. Oh yea, while your at it, hire some minorities to run the 'greenie programs'. The gov't has earmarked money for this sort of thing. Check with your local metropolitan planning organization.

Wheeling deserves to lose Federal funding.Tens of millions have been squadered by the City and quasi- City agencies with negative results.(eg phantom Victorian Malls per Aderholt and bogus WJU grants)

The NR and McKinley have been advocates of reductions in Federal spending. This is a excellent first step. The Airport Tower another.

West Virginia receives $2.63 from the federal gov't for every $1 WV sends to Washington. Every single red state sends less money to the federal gov't than what they receive. WV has raked in billions more than it ever paid in taxes. Just like Texas Senators voting NO on Sandy relief now the same Senators demand federal help. Unreal....

If Wheeling cannot fund its' needs through the current budgeting process, it must find a way to raise revenues and/or cut spending.

Since tax increases are not an option (who is left to pay them?), spending must decline.

Roughly 10% of the police positions are funded by Homeland Security grants.

Millions have been spent on studies and grants.

Boatloads of tax dollars go to support non-profits (which should be a big no no with public funds).

Get rid of your $100k/yr city manager and $50k/yr economic development manager. Neither is doing anything to grow the tax base.

This would be a good start.

What did Wheeling do before the CDBG money started rolling in/ A lot of it is used for projects that are dreamed up by people for pet projects.

"Cut spending"! Hardly....

400 million in projected spending cuts for CDBG money! 16 billion in CDBG money was just appropriated by Congress for New York and New Jersey to pay for the wealthy people living on the Coastal Flood Plains!

Funny how the editorial staff rails about the President's spending habits until he proposes spending cuts that affect our back yard. When it comes to us it's spend baby spend. When it comes to everyone else it's cut baby cut. What a bunch of hypocrites.
