Belmont County Plate Fee Rejected

Annual $10 surcharge would have been used for road maintenance

May 2, 2013

I am impressed with the Commissioners, especially Favede that they did not impose this tax. For sure the roads are in need of repairs and the gas companies who are running such heavy loads above the GVW limits should be kicking in, but to impose a tax like this on all residents does not seem right. Maybe as a levy approved by voters but not like this. I know that the gas boom is not statewide but it seems that the state might be able to enact some legislation that pinpoints those doing the most damage for fees. Its lame in WV but they did make gas companies post some kind of bond, or create a pool of money to fix roads once the intense drilling and truck traffic is over but WV's has a habit of diverting earmarked money. Still, nice job Commish. Thats not the way to fix a problem and nice to see that at least the majority on the Commissioners are thinking about the impact on ordinary folks. Roads needs fixed but not by people on fixed incomes who drive 5000mile

No. and No the money should not come from the State to fix/repair county roads. How about these so called leaders grow a pair and charge the trucks pounding the pavement with heavy loads. I'm not against truckers, was one for yrs. But I've seen all to many extra large weighted loads over the last year. No reason to go nuts on truckers, but a sensible county road bond system would work.

Mat just doesn't seem to understand that OUR money isn't HIS!!!

How could Coffland be so uninformed?

He talks like a SUPER liberal!!

Thinks stealing money from RESIDENTS to pay for damages CAUSED by NON-residents is a "fair" solution!!!

Drilling rigs, tankers, and flatbeds are all over Belmont county's roads and bridges causing road and bridge degredation ata a RECORD pace yet Mat wants US to pick up the tab!!!

OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!

Coffland needs to be FORCED to resign!!!

His actions are that of TREASON against the people of Belmont county!

good vote! spot on with the idea of millions of dollars are coming into the county with drilling. besides like everything else that 'xtra' money would get misappropriated and not be used for intended purpose and then you are stuck with the fee.

You had better vote no, the poll results were 3-1 against.
