Port Authority Audit Is Vital

May 14, 2013

It is not necessarily true that where there’s smoke, there also is fire. Still, an issue that has been smoldering for about a year, involving the Weirton Area Port Authority, should be resolved....

I think all authorities that use public money should have a audit. How many redevelopment authorities for counties, cities, and states get local money to spend but you never see a audit of their spending. I always hear of the BHJ AND HIGHLAND AND BDC all spending taxpayers’ money but never a audit of their spending of taxpayers’ dollars and all these water and sewer authorities needing more public money to run their operations. This paper need to publish all the salaries of these authorities and a copy of the letter that they sent to the legislature would be a good start to show what the concerns of our elected officials are and who are calling for the audit.

one additional note to this paper and the writer - do you do any research into your articles or do you just make it up as you go? per numerous previous articles - THERE IS NO TAX MONEY INVOLVED - not a penny. The newspaper should be liable for printing intentional falsehoods, and if not intentional, they they should be fired for incompetence - this is yellow Journalism

The City of Weirton knows there are no tax dollars involved, yet they still trying to smear an agency that is actually bringing in private investment to the region. A City resolution has no authority forcing any action by any agency - thus it's just a smear campaign and the real question is why is the City of Weirton not being investigated to see why they are smearing an entity that is actually doing what every other agency should be doing - bringing investment to the area - whoever wrote this really needs to get the facts before making such unreasonable claims - the City should force the State to stick their nose into private investments into private companies?????? no wonder businesses stay away from this region

If this is a smear campaign by city and county and other agencies their has to be more to this story. I would like to hear from the state level on this issue.

WVHoopie - I believe you are hearing from the State. The state created this Port, per all of the articles I've read, the State Port Authority has already commented that the port in weirton is doing exactly what the state is asking - do a searc in the WDT for Weirton Port and read some of the articles. I just started following a week ago and everything is there.

I guess the port is doing their job. So does that mean the City and County does not know how to read the paper or just want to control? Their has to be more to this than what is in the paper. Time to pull back the curtain and see if the city or county thinks they should be running the port because in the paper they keep saying they want to maybe change the board or maybe they want the port located in Wheeling since they already have the Heritage Port and Wheeling is such a growing city.

WVHoopie - I think you hit the nail on the head. Instead of thinking about the community and their Public Service responsibility, it appears they only care about control and what they get out of it, after squandering it for over a decade. From what I can find on the Port site, the city and county requested the the port be created, then did nothing for the past 10 years. It's all right on the port site - anyone who wants to read it can, I did. Just shows how much effort these complaining officials made, none - more of this "I want something for nothing" attitude that keeps businesses out of WV.
