Terrorists psychological war... 1.

American way of life...0.

Sorry...but life is way too short to live in fear.

Live well friends...go in love and respect for each other...it's what all of America really needs.

If you follow my advice, guess what will happen. The race will go off without a hitch. The same way it has every year since its inception. And Wheeling could end up being perceived as a forward-thinking city and model example for the rest of the nation. How's that for irony?

Will this happen? Of course not.

The Ogden 20K represents a borderline world class event right here in Wheeling. Rather than whipping people into an annoyed state of panicked inconvenience, there's an excellent opportunity for the city and race organizers to do the RIGHT thing. By "right," I mean eliminating all the unnecessary police state security and overzealous big brother silliness. Not only is it a waste of financial resources, it DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE. If a person is truly committed to reeking havoc, they will simply target a different large crowd.

There is a golden opportunity here. Take it in the exact OPPOSITE direction. Eliminate all but the most essential security, which to be blunt, are traffic cops. Inform residents that the city of Wheeling will not succumb to the mindless paranoia that is transforming our nation and destroying our civil liberties.

This is a bit extreme. I completely understand the need for higher security measures, so why not have security check bags and such. What are all the mothers going to do without a stroller or diaper bag? What about people on oxygen that have bags to carry their tanks? Not to mention telling all the women to leave their purses in their cars. I can imagine the thieves are going to be having a field day with that. Why does it always have to be all or none?! I'm sure someone can figure out a way to make accommodations so everyone can have an enjoyable day.

This "WAS" supposed to be an enjoyable day for everyone. Now that all kinds of scare tactics are coming out, they may as well cancel the whole thing. Like so much in this country, there are always some who want to control everything.

Saf - agree 100% - that*****RV needs to have some transparency - I think they need to open it up for public inspection. This country is being run into the ground by totalitarian idiots who want to dictate everything we do.

Here's a simple, superior solution to all this enhanced security nonsense. Have the police chief issue the following statement...

"We have made a conscious decision to employ the exact same race procedures and security protocol we used before 9/11. Our town and our citizens refuse to bend to the mind-numbing level of paranoia which has overcome the rest of the nation."

Will they do this? Of course not. Instead, they'll park that imbecilic "Dept. of Homeland Security RV" outside Wesbanco Arena. And they'll hire an army of extra private security to unwittingly harass people who've just ran an exhausting 20K.

It's a sad "tribute" to Memorial Day.
