The editors of this newspaper should remember the basic principles of a free press. Coupons and obituaries are not what our founding fathers had in mind when writing the Constitution. The slum in which you survive is much of your own making.

We were founded as a Constitutional Republic, with a central government that was, by design, limited in scope. The Founders believed, correctly, that giving the central government too much power would eventually lead to tyranny. The central government would grow too large and take too much power away from the states, which best represented the will of the people due to their proximity.

The Founders very wisely inserted the 10th Amendment, now ignored, which stated that any powers not SPECIFICALLY granted to the federal government by the Constitution belonged to the states and the people.

What this means is that the "general welfare" is not a power. If it were, the Founders would have provided a detailed explanation AND a funding mechanism. They did not. Thus, the general welfare cannot be provided for from tax dollars.

Our Constitutional Republic has been degraded into a populist Democracy.

OK: The NR prefers we return to a 1776 era government. I know they want to cling to the past(steel and coal),but that far back?
