Those who should be keeping us informed are not doing their jobs. If one reason Coal-fired power plants are being closed is because of CO2 emissions, you should know that, before long, we will buying recycled CO2 at the gas station; and, our money will be going straight to OPEC - who have developed the technologies to convert CO2 into stuff like methanol, gasoline and Diesel. "US Patent 8,288,446 - Catalytic Hydrogenation of CO2 into Syngas Mixture", for instance, was awarded in 2012 to Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Others are in the works. "Syngas", is a blend of Carbon Monoxide and Hydrogen which is routinely produced at some refineries for the synthesis of hydrocarbons. Right now, in the Persian Gulf nation of Bahrain, just off the coast of Saudi Arabia, a pilot plant is manufacturing hydrocarbons using CO2 as the raw material. We are all being victimized; and, no one has the nerve to publicly speak the truth of the matter.

WVcoughy, you Dumorats kill me.

A few yeas ago Natural Gas was at $8 per mCFM. Now it is down to $2 per mCFM, but it is $12-18 in the rest of the world.

As soon as the pipe lines from the OV to NJ and TX and in place, it can be exported and the price will rise.

And you dumbasses will be stuck with electric bills 4 times as high as you have ever seen in your life.

Something else you're not being told by your press is, that, right now, in the nation of Iceland, Carbon Dioxide is being captured by the company Carbon Recycling International, and, using technology developed primarily at the University of Southern California by a Nobel Prize-winning chemist named George Olah, that company is converting that CO2 into fuel alcohol, which is being sold at service stations in several Scandinavian countries.

Whopee: 'Wheeling Jesuit University biology professor Ben Stout is not so sure.

"Methane is 20 times as powerful of a greenhouse gas than CO2," he said, a statement supported by information from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. "Eventually, we are going to run out of fossil fuels, whether its coal, gas or oil. We need to be working to find a more sustainable strategy."

You dummies kill me. What part of "20 times as powerful greenhouse gas" don't you get???

Kaching Kaching! Suckered again.

Since we mentioned the Nobel Prize-winning chemist, George Olah, in our comment below, you should know that he has claimed, and the US Government has agreed, that Coal can be a CO2-neutral fuel. "United States Patent 8,461,215 - Rendering Coal As An Environmentally Carbon Dioxide Neutral Fuel And A Regenerative Carbon Source" was just awarded, on June 11, 2013, to George Olah and G.K. Surya Prakash at The University of Southern California. The "invention provides a method for rendering coal as an environmentally essentially carbon dioxide-neutral fuel" by combining "Carbon dioxide produced from coal combustion ... with hydrogen" and reacting them together to produce fuel alcohol, a substitute Diesel fuel and other "synthetic hydrocarbons and products".

WVUGEO, you need to get right on building that clean, green CO2 to fuel plant you're always babbling about. I understand there's an industrial site in north Warwood just waiting for a clean, green industry like yours.

How do you plan to get that snake oil out? Truck? Pipeline? Barge? No, they won't let you use any of those. How about flying carpet? Gloria might approve that... LOL

Methane is, as Wraith notes below, a much, much more potent greenhouse gas than Carbon Dioxide. And, a lot of it, really a lot if it, leaks from shale gas fracking operations. The University of Colorado says as much as 20 percent of it is lost to the atmosphere. We can, however, if we want, in a more controlled way, make Methane from Carbon Dioxide. "US Patent 8,440,438 - Electromethanogenic Reactor and Processes for Methane Production" was just awarded, on May 14, 2013, to Penn State University. It provides for a reactor containing "methanogenic microorganisms" that consume CO2 and "produce methane gas". Japan's Panasonic Corporation has developed a number of technologies, like that disclosed in "US Patent Application 20120018311 - Carbon Dioxide Reduction Method" which use sunlight to drive the photo-electrochemical conversion of Carbon Dioxide into Methane.

Walking in from the Wheeling Hospital parking lot a month ago I saw bumper stickers that I could not resist taking a picture. It was a 4WD truck and had two bumper stickers, one was all about being a proud coal miner and the UMWA amd the other was a leftover Obama/Biden sticker. I could not imagine how dumb that truck owner would have to be to embrace both views. I thought about waiting to get a picture of the dumbest animal on earth but then realized he was probably in the hospital getting his head examined. No matter which view you have on coal, you have to marvel at someone who votes against his very existance. Yrs ago I belonged to the Sierra Club and would go to meetings in Morgantown. I fly fish and do have an interest in clean streams, but the SC was mostly about partisan politics. A parking lot full of massive SUVs and endorsing Byrd/Rockefeller for election despite them blocking the Clean Air Act for 26 yrs. Pollution is just a political device, and thats a shame.

As far as Mercury, also mentioned as an offensive emission, goes, if anyone wants to look up the details, the US EPA itself, in the course of a contract it let and managed - - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Contract No. 68-D-01-075 - - confirmed that any Mercury in Coal-Fired power plant exhaust could be captured by being absorbed onto Coal fly ash; and, that fly ash could then be used to make high-performance concrete, where any Mercury would be forever encapsulated. Some US Patents were applied/issued for the technology; but, it was never promoted or even advertised; and, no one was given the opportunity to implement it.

Triton: Concerning the seemingly conflicting UMWA and Obama stickers on the truck you saw, the driver who put them on might have been swayed by something your local press never bothered to tell you about: Back in 2005/2006, then-Senator Obama partnered with WV's US Senator Robert Byrd, and others, to co-sponsor the "Coal to Liquid Fuel Promotion Act", which would have promoted the establishment of a US industry to convert Coal into Gasoline and Diesel, like they've been doing in South Africa quite successfully for the past half a century. Receiving no notice or support from the Coal Country media, it got buried, and died, "in committee".

WVUGEO “Methane is... a much, much more potent greenhouse gas than Carbon Dioxide... We can... make Methane from Carbon Dioxide.”

So GEO wants to turn a greenhouse gas into a “much more potent greenhouse gas.” A greenhouse gas he’s been arguing AGAINST in his regular redundant monotonous anti-gas posts here. Doesn’t sound very green to me, GEO. Or very consistent.

I suppose GEO will argue we’ll be burning all of that methane. But what about spills? Leaks? You know you can’t have any industrial process without spills, as you’ve reminded us numerous times in our fracking discussions.

WVUGEO “fly ash could then be used to make high-performance concrete, where any Mercury would be forever encapsulated.”

Forever is a long time, GEO. Have you ever seen concrete wear, decompose, crumble, fall in tiny pieces into the storm drains and culverts? I have. That’s where all your “forever encapsulated” mercury will wind up in a relatively few years, and then washed into the water supply. Why would you advocate exposing future generations of children to exposure to the “horrific” diseases and deaths caused by mercury exposure, just to shill for your coal to snake oil scam? Shame shame.

And how can WVUGEO argue that mercury and even radioactive materials like uranium and radium in coal ash can be “forever encapsulated” in the concrete used to build roads and bridges that school buses full of our children will travel over every day, while not seeming to understand the concept of sequestration of fracking flowback and its trace concentration of radium a MILE below the ground?

Maybe WVU isn’t making GEOs like they used to...

Troll: True, Methane leaks - but, if we're going to use it, we might as well make it from Carbon Dioxide. NASA, too, by the way, has developed the tech to do that, based on original CO2-to-Methane technology invented by Paul Sabatier, who won the 1912, yes, 1912, Nobel Prize in Chemistry. But, once we have the Methane, interestingly, it can be catalytically reacted with even more Carbon Dioxide, in what are known as "bi-reforming" and "tri-reforming" reactions, with both the Methane and the CO2 being converted into syngas which can be condensed into all types of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons. See, for example: "'United States Patent 2,448,290 - Process for the Production of Synthesis Gas'; 1948; Assignee: The Texas Company (Texaco); Abstract: This invention relates to ... the reaction of a gaseous hydrocarbon (methane) with carbon dioxide and steam so as to produce carbon monoxide and hydrogen".
